WENTWORTH, N.H. -- A foreboding forecast and a rain delay may have hurt the car count and the front gate on Peanuts Automotive night, but Legion Speedway owner Si Allen, Promoter Wally Brown and Track Prep Guru Dan Bowne decided to go for broke Sunday. With the drivers agreeing to pitch in and help, the show went on.

Todd Buckwold of Orange, NH won his first ever feature in the Forward’s Garage Modifieds, doing it decisively by leading every lap. “We didn’t know if we were going to race because of the rain. We put the ten-race-old tires on the back and just went out with it “Buckwold said. Chad Turk came from seventh to finish second and Fred Fecteau had his best run of the season, coming from 10th to finish third.

In the Papa Z’s 600cc Mini Sprints, Brian Gray of Meredith, NH appeared to win his fourth feature of the year, but Gray saw it differently. “Let’s call it three and a half,” Gray said in victory lane because Luke Greenwood lost an engine while leading the scant field. Rookie Kyle Huntington was second and Greenwood was credited with third.

Josh Sunn of White River Jct., VT won his second Outlaw Mini Stock feature in just his second start. Sunn, who raced his Budget Sportsman on Friday night at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway, came from 15th to win the caution-plagued event. “When you have a lot of cars on a small track, it’s fun working your way through traffic,” Sunn beamed in victory lane. Last week’s winner Doug Boucher came from tenth to finish second and asphalt emigrant Chris Conroy was third. First time Legion Speedway starter Bobby Bell had a noteworthy run, coming from dead last in the 19 car field to finish fourth.

“We just winged it,” was how Doug McPhail of Tilton, NH described setting up his car for the post-rainstorm heavy, tacky track. Just winging it was good enough to give McPhail his third win in three attempts in the Street Stocks. Sam Comeau celebrated his 35th birthday by coming from eighth to finish second and points leader Mark Brown was third.

“The Fastest Dirt Track Cars in New England,” the 360 cubic inch, methanol snorting Sprint Cars of New England return to the Legion Speedway this Sunday for their third appearance of the season. The Winged Warriors will be accompanied by the Papa Z’s 600cc Mini Sprints, Outlaw Mini Stocks and Street Stocks in a program sponsored by Neal Davis Model Race Cars.

Hot laps are at 4:00 pm with the first green flag scheduled to drop an hour later.

Located on the Rumney/Wentworth town line, Legion Speedway is easily reached from Interstates 89, 91 and 93. Adult admission is only $10, with Juniors and Seniors at $8.00. Kids 11 and under are free with an accompanying paid admission and money saving Family Pack is just $25. Parking is always free.
