Friday, May 11, 2012 'The Flying Carpenter' Dick Kluth Wins WCIS Opener
by Steve PettyPERRY, N.Y. -- For the 53rd season, the gates at Wyoming County International Speedway opened to race fans as the 1/3rd mile Bullring was ready to come alive with the sights and sounds of stock cars on the famed Perry oval. Opening Night is a special day in the life of drivers as they can test their stuff for the first time. Getting a win on Opening Night is special for drivers and for Dick Kluth, Austyn Fugle, Tom Lalomia Jr and Mark Loveland, it made a great start to their 2012 campaigns.
American Racer Tire and RJP Motorsports presented Opening Day 2012 at the “Bullring”. The off track activities included an autograph session during intermission on “Meet the Drivers and SST Angels” Night. Before the racing got on the track, students from the Warsaw School District had their CO2 cars on track for some racing action.
The “Flying Carpenter” Dick Kluth and Ed Schueler led the field to the green flag for the 30 lap feature event for the SST Modifieds with Kluth getting out to the early race lead. Contact was made with Schueler and Jim Love that sent both cars pit side for the duration of the feature. On the restart Kluth showed Beaver Dams, NY resident Brittany Jack the fast way around the Bullring. As Kluth, a 54 year veteran of racing from Hilton and Jack was leading the field, a battle for third shaped up between Tom Wiest and Tony Pangrazio. The small but competitive field of SST Modifieds put on a great show for the fans.
Jack got loose coming off of turn four and brought out the caution after a long green flag run. Kluth would pull away on the restart and would hold off all challenges from Jack and Wiest to pick up his first win at WCIS in many seasons.
Ronnie Greek and Austyn Fugle led the field of SST Super Stocks to starter James Mitchell’s green flag with Greek out to the early lead. Early on, Austyn Fugle took the top spot away from Greek and started to pull away from the field. The competitive field of Super Stocks was putting on a great show for the fans with Fugle, Greek and Daniel Majchrzak running up front with two time defending track Champion Phil Alhart Jr running right behind the top three for most of the race. A caution for a spinning Daniel Majchrzak slowed the field down right before the halfway mark and on the lap 11 restart, Fugle would once again pull away from the field.
The Fugle’s Auto Parts, NAPA Auto Parts of Dansville, Livonia and Mt Morris ride was “running on rails” and proved to the rest of the field that he will be tough to beat in 2012. Fugle would go on to pick up the win on Opening Night over Ronnie Greek and Cassie Logsdon completed the top three.
Dakota Packman and Kevin Grom would lead the 4 Cylinders to the green flag with Grom jumping out into the lead. Grom would be able to lead the first couple of circuits until Eric Hastreiter took command. Hastreiter would lead a couple of laps before Tom Lalomia Jr took the lead at the head of the class.
Lalomia, from Getzville in his Woodsmith Fence Corps machine was running away from the field but stayed in the tire tracks of Hastreiter. While going through lap traffic, the leaders would come together and collected rookie Chris Adams and Adams made hard contact with the turn three fence. Adams would walk away under his own power but his number 21 machine had assistance getting back to the pit area. Another incident took place as Roger Miller hit the front stretch wall with his number 03. Miller also walked away from the accident under his own power. The restart saw Bob Bogner lead the field but his Ford Probe was no test as Lalomia was able to get back to the lead to pick up feature win number one of the season. Lalomia was followed to the line by Bogner and Kevin Grom.
The Western New York Vintage Late Model Stock Car Club made their first appearance of the season and it was “Mc Lovin” Mark Loveland picking up the victory. It was his first win on the asphalt in many seasons for the Raceway 5 and Humberstone Speedway Street Stock titlist. Loveland and teammate Rich Zellner dedicated their top two finishes to the memory of Mark’s father who passed away one year ago.
WCIS will return to action next Friday night with Twin 25’s for the SST Modifieds with the Super Stocks and 4 Cylinders rounding out the racing card. The popular Roll the Tire Contest for the kids will take center stage during intermission. Gates will be opening at 5pm in the pits and grandstands with racing getting underway at 7:30pm.
WCIS is located on Adrian Road in Perry, NY and can be reached by phone at 585-237-2580 or on race day at 585-237-2510. WCIS can also be found online on Facebook as well as the tracks website, www.wyomingcountyinternationalspeedway.com
