Wyoming County International Speedway
Friday, August 17, 2012 Dick Kluth, Austyn Fugle, Eric Hastreiter and Rich Zellner All Collect Checkereds at WCIS
by Steve PettyPERRY, N.Y. -- A gorgeous Friday night welcomed the fans and drivers to Wyoming County International Speedway for the August 17th racing program which featured a 5,000 penny pickup for the kids. On the track it was Hilton, NY’s Dick Kluth picking up his second win of the season in the SST Modifieds. Austyn Fugle of Livonia, NY won his fourth SST Super Stock feature of the season while Gainesville, NY’s Eric Hastreiter won his fourth 4 Cylinder feature event of the season.
Tom Wiest and Jim Love led the field of SST Modifieds to the green flag of Starter George Deaton for their 30 lap feature event Wiest getting out into the early lead. Waverly, NY pilot Brittany Jack and West Falls, NY competitor Tim Welshans got together in turn one to slow the field down for the first time with one lap in the books. On the restart, it was Wiest in the lead until getting passed by six time feature winner Jimmy Zacharias and two time feature winner Don King Jr running right behind him after passing Wiest for second.
Wiest would have his good night end up on the back of the tow truck after breaking his upper a-frame after having contact with Jack in turns three and four to bring out the second caution of the event. On the restart, third generation driver Jimmy Zacharias would pull away from the field in search for his seventh win of the season at the 1/3rd mile oval and had to deal with lap traffic throughout the second half of the feature race.
While fighting for the race lead, Zacharias and Don King would spin in turn four, bringing out the race’s third caution. As a result, Dick Kluth would inherit the lead after the front two cars were involved in the caution. Kluth would hold off Jimmy Zacharias and Brittany Jack to win his second feature of the season.
Alan Bookmiller and Brad Collings were on the front row for the 25 lap Super Stock feature event and it would be Bookmiller getting out into the race lead. Bookmiller would have the lead early on until being passed by Austyn Fugle. Fugle, who won the last time WCIS was racing, would pull away from the field as the race went on.
Two time defending track champion Phil Alhart Jr from Fairport, NY would work his way up through the field and had a great battle for second with five other competitors in the closest race of the night. The five car freight train would try to get close to the top two and Alhart would try to get around Bookmiller for second but was unsuccessful. Fugle would lead all but two laps to claim his fourth win of the year over Bookmiller and Alhart.
Christine Hanel and Dakota Packman led the field of 4 Cylinders to the green flag with Hanel leading the opening circuits. Hanel had a 10 car length lead over the field early on in her Able Agency, Fast Cash and Ride number 33 before being chassed down by Eric Hastreiter in his Southpaw Sign, Bill at the Grill, Silver Lake Marine entry. Hastreiter would pull away after passing Hanel on lap eight to claim the victory. Packman would complete the top three.
Rich Zellner, Mark Loveland and Ray Hadsell put on an exhibition for the Western New York Vintage Late Models and it was Rich Zellner picking up the checkered flag in the 10 lap affair. Join us next Friday night August 24th as it is the rescheduled Pirate Trailer Race presented by Elitsac Lumber. The SST Modifieds, Super Stocks and 4 Cylinders will be on the racing card.
