Oshkosh Speedzone ‘Gets Busy’ in August
by Jeffrey Sachse
SHKOSH, Wis. -- The Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway stood idle for much of the month of July. Two festivals on the track grounds and a rainout left the raceway with a leisurely two event schedule during the month.
That’s about to change! It’s time to “get busy” at The Zone.
The month of August will truly have something for everyone as the third-mile clay oval will play host to seven different racing events.
At the conclusion of August fans will have witnessed - fastest cars on dirt, high powered top tier racing machines both fendered and open-wheeled, a return of racing to the Winnebago County Fair, a return of the Late Models, championships decided in all five weekly classes, a debut of a successful local modified series at the track, a race of endurance and more!
Simply put Oshkosh Speedzone will have the type of racing you enjoy during the month of August, no matter what your preference.
It all begins on August 3rd as long time track supporters Knaus Cheese and Weyauwega Star Dairy present the Leroy Dehn Memorial Race. The evening will mark the next step in the chase for the track championship as all five weekly divisions will be hand. Nearly 120 cars will be representing the classes which include the Automotive Supply Company Modifieds, Leon’s Frozen Custard IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds, Miller Lite Grand Nationals, Total Power Sales Street Stocks and Lynn’s Service Center Dirt Devils.
Racing action is set to begin promptly at 7:00pm with adult tickets $10, students ages 11 through 15 are admitted for $5 and children 10 and under are FREE.
There will be just enough time for the competitors to clean their cars, tighten the bolts and prepare to hit the track again as a full night of racing action will open the Winnebago County Fair on Tuesday Night August 7th. Again all five weekly classes will be in attendance for a full point program.
It has been two years since people attending the Winnebago County Fair have had an opportunity to experience short track racing action during fair week.
Fair attendees can use their general admission pass to witness the racing action which will be taking place on the third-mile clay oval. The fair admission includes admission onto grounds, grandstand shows and unlimited rides, this includes the ability to attend the races at no additional charge above the cost of a fair admission ticket. The fair officially opens at 5:00pm, with racing action set to take place at 7:00pm.
Advance tickets into the fair are just $10 if tickets are purchased by Monday, August 6th. General admission fair tickets purchased at the gate will be $12. To receive the discount fair admission tickets must be pre-ordered prior to Monday, August 6th.
Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.winnebagocountyfaironline.com/store/ Fair admission tickets can also be purchased at the track during the August 4th program.
With no other area tracks in operation that Tuesday evening provides an opportunity for drivers from other tracks to experience the competitive racing program at Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway.
There is no scheduled racing action on Friday Night August 10th.
It will be crunch time in the championship point chase when racing resumes on August 17th with a program that features a Kid’s Ride along Session prior to the start of the racing program. Young fans arriving at the track early will have a chance to ride around the track with their favorite drivers. At 7:00pm the ride along ends and the racing action begins as another five division show takes place with drivers in each weekly division putting their title hopes on the line as the point season begins to wind down.
Then fans who have the need for speed can witness two of the fastest classes of race cars to take to a clay oval anywhere with WDLMA Late Models and IRA Outlaw Winged Sprints taking to the track in back to back programs which are part of the “Week of Speed” at The Zone.
Fans who wish to attend both events can get a discounted adult ticket for $28. These tickets will be sold at the track or by calling (920) 252-1463 or (920) 279-9096.
It all begins on Tuesday Night, August 21st as the Late Models return after a several year absence. The show presented by Hansel Trucking will feature the fastest fendered cars on clay will take to the raceway under the WDLMA banner and a full field of the finest area Late Model pilots will take to the track. But that’s not all, the popular Badger Modified series will make its debut at “Wisconsin’s Modified Action Track” for what should be the largest turnout of area modified racers at the raceway this season. Also part of this special event will be the Leon’s Frozen Custard IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds running a full point program, with IMCA National points on the line you never know who may appear!
Special admission pricing is in effect for the show with adult tickets set at $15 while students ages 11-15 are admitted for $8. As usual children 10 and under are welcome FREE of charge with a paid adult.
The “Week of Speed” concludes on Friday Night, August 24th, with the true masters of high velocity racing taking to the third-mile clay oval as the 900 horsepower winged open-wheeled sprint cars of the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints will be on hand ripping around the track at speed approaching 120mph! For those fendered fans, you can catch the point battle waging on as three weekly classes join the sprints in action. The Miller Lite Grand Nationals, Total Power Sales Street Stocks and Lynn’s Service Center Dirt Devils get down to it in the second to last point show of the year. Qualifying for the sprint cars will take place at 7:00pm with racing to follow.
Adult admission for the show is $20 for adults, $10 for students ages 11 through 15, while Children 10 and under are again admitted FREE.
Just two days later on Sunday Afternoon August 26th, The Gladiator Racing Series visits The Oshkosh Speedzone with a special show featuring twin 100 lap main events for V8 powered endure cars and twin 75 lap four cylinder feature events. All surrounding area Hobby stocks, street stocks, bombers with the V8 class. Hornets, bandits and bumble bees are invited to participate with the 4 cylinders. The pit gates will open at 9:30 am. Practice begins at 10:00am with races starting at 1:00pm.
Grandstands will open at 12 noon with admission priced at $7 for adults. As always children 10 and under are free.
The month of August will wrap up with the LaSure’s Banquet Hall Night of Champions on Friday Night August 31. That evening, all five weekly divisions will compete in the season’s final point program. At the shows conclusion the 2012 track champions will be crowned.
Several point battles should be going down to the wire and the championship chases in the Sport Modifieds, Grand Nationals and Dirt Devils are especially close. Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway is a 1/3 mile semi-banked clay oval located at the Sunnyview Expo Center which resides near the intersection of Highways 76 and County Trunk Y in Oshkosh.
