Saturday, November 15, 2003 Feature wins for Johnston, Reinolds and Larson
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. -- Veteran outlaw kart racer Pete Johnston turned a second row start into a feature win in the Open Outlaw A Main Saturday night as the Red Bluff Winter Indoor Outlaw Kart season finished off a five straight week stretch Saturday night. After skipping two weekends for Thanksgiving, the racing will resume on the first 3 Saturday nights in December. Fellow second row starter Bryan Eady ran second ahead of Kyle Cattanach. Having taken over the point lead with his win at the previous race, Justin Reinolds added to his margin with a near perfect night in the Open Intermediate class. He was the quickest kart of the night in time trials, ran third in the dash, then added wins in both his heat and the feature. Point runnerups Chadd Noland and Brett Miller stayed closed with a 3rd and a 2nd behind Reinolds. Almost exactly four years to the day after he started his outlaw kart career, Kyle Larson picked off his first Red Bluff feature win. Larson has been a prolific winner at the other outlaw kart tracks, but a Red Bluff A Main win had eluded him since he started racing on Nov 13, 1999. He took the lead late in the race from Jonny Lentz and won ahead of Mason Moore, Ryan Gomes and point leader Rudger Worley. Larson had started the night just 11 points back of Worley. Larson's racing is sponsored by QRC Inc, RPM-Race Place Motorsports Indoor Kart Racing, Del's Machine Shop, McColloch's RV Repairs, Pacific Valley Fire Protection Inc, Gary Morgan's Graphics, CareFree Pools, Lary's Good Time Garage and Art & Susan Pineau. Raymond Close won the Box Stock A Main ahead of former champion Derek Kennemore and Jason Mittry. Cyle Allison gained a little ground on Beginner Box Stock point leader Kellcy Bell with a victory in their A Main. Bell ran second ahead of Wesley Dougherty. After four straight wins, Clarence Marshall was finally beaten in a feature race for the new F200 class as he placed second behind dash winner Paul Baker.
The rookie of the year on the tough SRL Late Model series this summer, Ryan Foster set fast time over a 51 kart Open Outlaw field with his 8.708 clocking. Brian McCain had a 8.726 and Steven Gannon ranked third at 8.735. Cattanach, Daniel Becker, Sean Becker and David Wilson were also in the 8.7 second bracket and the fastest 25 were all in the 8's. Having established himself as a winged sprint car star in his second season in that class, Sean Becker took dash honors ahead of Gannon and Cattanach. Again, the five heat format advances just the top two finishers in each heat into the A Main. Tyler McCain beat Fort Jones racer Matt Menne in heat 1 and his older brother Brian McCain won heat 2 over point leader Robbie Whitchurch. Jason Webb and Johnston were 1-2 in heat 3 and Cattanach beat Eady in heat 4. Jason Schuppert won heat 5 ahead of Kyle Hirst. That leaves four transfer slots from the always competitive B Main and Foster won that event ahead of Gannon, Cycleland titlest Daniel Becker and S Becker. The Becker clan had three of the top six as female racer Jaime Becker ran sixth behind Beau Perkins. USAC Ford Focus Midget star Ryan Kaplan failed to transfer with a 10th after he won the E Main, won the D Main and ran second to Josh Chartier in the C Main. J Becker was third in the C Main. Keith Hill and Tyler Schohr were 2-3 in the D Main and Schohr also ran in the E Main behind Oregon's Joe Weststeyn. Johnston took the A Main win ahead of Eady, Cattanach, Foster, Webb, D Becker, Whitchurch, S Becker and T McCain. When his throttle cable broke, B McCain ran the A Main with one hand as he used the other hand to pull up and down on the cable so he could continue. The consistent Whitchurch added to his point lead as closest rival Gannon ran 14th.
J Reinolds was the quickest of the 17 Open Intermediates and paced all classes with his 8.684 clocking. That easily paced the 8.883 of Tyler Ritcheson. Also breaking into the 8's were Brent Hamilton, Micah Parmer, Noland, B Miller and Chad Widener. Fifth quick Noland won the dash ahead of B Miller and Reinolds. Reinolds outdueled Southern Oregon star Noland in the first heat and B Miller won heat 2 over female ace Reyna Krueger. A B Main was run to limit the A to 14 karts and Parmer won that event over Grass Valley area racers Glenn Parman and Adam Main. Reinolds, B Miller and Noland continued their great evenings with a 1-2-3 finish in the A Main ahead of Cody Braund, Krueger, Widener, Main and Parman. Taylor Simas made a hurried trip north after racing in Chico and made the A Main with a fifth in his heat. He finished 13th in the feature. He is battling for the Chico point lead.
Having become a potent qualifier, Dillon Silverman again paced the 23 125's with a 8.886 lap. Larson ran a 8.937 and point leader Worley a 8.954. McKinleyville's Ryan Gomes was the final 8 second runner with a 8.997. Fifth quick Lentz won the dash ahead of Worley and Larson. In this class, three heats transfer four karts each. Santa Rosa's Klint Simpson won heat 1 over Gomes and Lentz took heat 2 over Michael Forslund. Worley and Derek Copeland were 1-2 in heat 3. This leaves four transfer spots out of the B Main and Derek O'Bannon won that race ahead of MacKena Bell and Andrew Cumpton. The feature lineup inverts the six fastest to transfer out of the heat action and that placed M Moore and Lentz on the front row with Larson and Silverman in row 3. Lentz grabbed a quick lead and Larson moved up to challenge M Moore for second. After a caution for Silverman, Larson took second from M Moore and he was able to gain the lead when Lentz pushed high. Cody Miller flipped for a lap 21 red flag and a late race incident dropped Lentz in the standings as Larson won ahead of M Moore, Gomes, Worley, Michael Forslund, O'Bannon, Dillon Aldred and C Miller.
Point leader Keith Bloom Jr was the quickest Box Stock with a 9.541 timing. Cycleland champion Brad Patchen ran a 9.640 and Mittry a 9.714. The quickest 11 of the 33 kart turnout were all in the 9's. Bloom then came from the rear to win the dash over Derek Kennemore. This class runs four heats and advances the top 3 in each. Bloom's perfect night continued with a heat 1 win over David Chaves. Jesse Taylor and Ukiah's Andrew Anderson were 1-2 in heat 2 and Mittry beat Close in heat 3. Derek Kennemore outraced Casey McClain and younger brother Doug Kennemore in heat 4. Top runner Chase Hill was forced to run the C Main and he won that ahead of James Crowell and Seth Nunes. Hill then placed second to Patchen in the B Main with R J Johnson and Jesse Red also transferring. Close won the A Main ahead of Derek Kennemore, Mittry, Bloom, Tyler Reddick, the busy Hill, Johnson and Red. Bloom added to his point margin as closest rivals Patchen and Anderson placed 14th and 16th.
Nevada's K Bell was the quickest of the 24 Beginner Box Stocks with a 10.785 timing. That just nipped the 10.819 of Tyler Seavey and the 10.939 of Allison as these three drivers dominate the class. Fourth quick Logan Taylor won the dash ahead of T Seavey and K Bell. Jake Morgan beat David Lee and K Bell in heat 1 and T Seavey outraced Tony Marcos in heat 2. Allison and Wesley Dougherty were 1-2 in heat 3. L Taylor ran fourth in his heat and had to run the B Main that he won ahead of Jake Back and Logan Seavey. Allison's A Main win was the third on his career as K Bell placed second ahead of Dougherty, T Seavey, Katina Baker, Marcos and Thomas Bellamy. K Bell had started the night just 3 points in front of T Seavey and 12 ahead of Allison. Marshall was the quickest of the six F200 karts with his 10.440, but that just nipped the 10.466 turned in by Jeremy Zirkle. Cycleland announcer Sally Long was slated to drive the kart that Mike Larson and Mike Reinolds share, but she couldn't arrive until the dash time. Larson, the father of and crew chief for 125 winner Kyle Larson, got his first win in the heat race ahead of Zirkle and Marshall. Long arrived in time for the dash, but her chain fell off and Baker took dash honors ahead of Marshall and Gary Gabel. In the feature, it was slow qualifier Baker winning ahead of fast timer Marshall, Gabel, Zirkle, Keaven Seavey and Long.
The December race dates at Red Bluff will include the finale for the traveling QRC All Star Tour on Dec 13th and the QRC is hosting a BBQ-Open House on that Friday night.
