Saturday, December 6, 2003 First Red Bluff feature win for Moore
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. -- After earlier claiming the dash honors, Mason Moore from Princeton led all 25 laps to win his first ever Red Bluff feature as he paced the 125 Intermediate A Main ahead of McKinleyville long tow Ryan Gomes and new point leader Kyle Larson. Fast timer Larson emerged with the point lead as former pacesetter Rudger Worley crashed with a lapped kart while leading the B Main on the final lap and failed to transfer into the A Main action. Box Stock point leader Keith Bloom Jr added to his advantage as he combined wins in the dash and feature. He paced all 25 laps of the A Main. When point runnerup Derek Kennemore became too ill to race after qualifying for the A Main, Chase Hill replaced him for the dash and feature and finished second behind Bloom, ahead of Andrew Anderson. Anderson missed his heat race making engine repairs, but charged through the C and B Mains to earn an A Main start. The Beginner Box Stock action showed why young Carson City, Nevada female racer Kellcy Bell is pacing the point standings. She posted fast time for the sixth straight race, won the dash and then led the final 23 laps to win that 25 lap feature. Logan Seavey placed second in the main event ahead of Logan Taylor.
Having won the main event in Lakeport on Thanksgiving weekend, Larson paced the 23 Open Intermediates with a 8.933 qualifying run. A very ill Jonny Lentz was second quick at 8.971 and Worley timed in third fast at 9.047. MacKena Bell and Derick Copeland rounded out the quickest five. Moore beat Copeland and Bell in the dash. The heat action uses invert 4 lineups and transfers the top 3. Gomes beat Derek O’Bannon the first heat. A late race yellow gave Larson the opening he needed and he drove around Bell on the restart to take that third transfer slot. Shane Graham won heat 2 over Copeland and Jacob Park. Gaining points for Allie Moore who had a basketball commitment, Brian Southers won heat 3 ahead of Nevada’s Tom Purcell and M Moore. Worley got into the infield in this race and had to scramble back to a fifth. Worley was headed to a transfer out of the B Main as he led every lap from the pole only to run into the back of Amanda Reinolds in turn 1 on the last lap. He got hung up on the infield wall and saw Bell collect that 20 lap win ahead of Dillon Silverman, Justin Grant and Lentz. Grant had made the quick tow north after winning the feature run in Chico earlier in the afternoon. The feature still started one kart short as double division racer Purcell elected to scratch. A Graham spin forced a restart and Moore raced into the lead ahead of Gomes, Larson, Southers and Copeland. By the midway mark, Bell had raced into sixth ahead of Park and Robert Marcos. The first caution didn’t fall until lap 17 as Grant and Marcos tangled. The red came on lap 19 as Lentz flipped, but he was able to continue. Graham spun for a lap 20 yellow and Park flipped in turn 3 on the restart for another red. Moore stayed out front for the win with Gomes a solid second. Larson ran third ahead of Southers and Bell made a late move into fifth only to lose the spot to Silverman on the last lap. Bell settled for sixth ahead of Copeland, Grant and Lentz.
Sporting new colors, Cycleland champion Brad Patchen was the quickest of the 32 Box Stocks with his 10.287 run. Derek Kennemore ran a 10.328 and Dustin Jenkins was third at 10.423. Fifth quick Bloom won the dash ahead of Patchen and Doug Kennemore. This division runs invert 4 heat races and transfers the top 3. Eureka’s Riley King won the first heat over R J Johnson and Bloom. Wyatt Pruitt won heat 2 ahead of Jacob Miller and Derek Kennemore. Jenkins beat Andy Menne and Ashley Eiler in heat 3 after Jennifer Purcell spun leading. Nicholas Bellamy edged Raymond Close and Seth Nunes in heat 4. Patchen only managed a fourth in heat 1, but won the B Main ahead of Doug Kennemore, Jason Mittry and back of the pack starter Anderson. Hill failed to transfer with a fifth, but jumped into Derek Kennemore kart for both the dash and 25 lap feature. Purcell had won the C Main ahead of previous week Lakeport winner Anderson, Tyler Reddick and Jonathan Hoheisel. The 25 lap A Main had to be restarted after outside front row starter Nunes spun in front of the whole pack coming off turn 4 to finish the first lap. On the next try, Johnson spun and Anderson got collected in a tangle but everyone continued with Bloom taking a big early lead over Nunes, J Miller and Hill. Hill gained third on lap 2 and Menne tangled with Mittry and Jenkins for a lap 5 yellow. Patchen was flying as he gained fifth on lap 2 and raced into fourth on this restart. Hill took second on lap 7 with Kaylee Eiler tangling with Pruitt for a lap 8 yellow. This time, Nunes spun with Patchen and Anderson gaining the 3-4 slots. Bellamy broke into the top five on lap 12 and Mittry crashed on a lap 14 restart. An infield excursion late in the race cost Bellamy fifth as Anderson failed got around Patchen for third on lap 18. Bloom won ahead of Hill, Anderson, Patchen, Menne, Doug Kennemore, Bellamy, Nunes and Johnson.
The Beginner Box Stock class had a solid 25 kart field and K Bell continued her incredible string of fast times with a 11.727 lap. L Seavy was second at 11.817 with Cyle Allison a distant third ahead of David Lee and Wesley Dougherty. Passing Dougherty at the white flag, K Bell added the dash win. Since only two karts advance out of each heat, they use an invert 3 lineup. Dougherty beat Bell in heat 1 with Bryce Perry the winner of heat 2 over L Seavey. Katina Baker beat Tyler Seavey in heat 3 and Tony Marcos won heat 4 over L Taylor. Allison won the B Main ahead of Jake Morgan and David Lee. Morgan really put on a show in the C Main as he lapped the entire field. Tanner Thomson and Lain Baker finished 2-3. The main event had a four kart inversion and Dougherty led Bell for the first two laps. Perry spun for a lap 2 yellow and Bell raced into the lead on the restart. L Seavey settled into third ahead of Taylor and the flying Morgan. By lap 8, Bell was 1/3 lap in front of the four kart duel for second. Taylor took third from L Seavey on lap 13 and began an inside groove challenge of second place Dougherty. Taylor gained second on lap 17, but gave it back a lap later. Taylor spun in turn 2 on lap 21 to move Morgan into third. Rookie Keyler Heinze tangled with Perry and they collected top runners Dougherty and Morgan for that late race caution. Bell stayed out front to win ahead of L Seavey, Taylor, Allison and T Seavey. Morgan came back for sixth ahead of Dougherty and Marcos.
