RED BLUFF, Calif. -- Brian McCain opened his night by lowering his own one week old track record down to 8.369 seconds, then passed his younger brother Tyler McCain on the outside of turn 2 on lap 21 to win the 30 lap Open Outlaw Kart A Main as the prestigious QRC All Star Tour finished off it’s 8 race season with a leg at the Red Bluff Indoor Track. B McCain came from 13th to win the 30 lapper as he earlier won the B Main honors. With the win, the Win River Casino sponsored racer joined T McCain as a two time winner on the series, but fell two points short in his bid to overtake his brother for the series championship worth $1,000. T McCain won the championship with a two point lead over B McCain and a 14 point advantage on Zack Mason, who carried a ten point lead into the Red Bluff action. The big night did gain B McCain the Red Bluff winter season point lead as he attempts to defend that championship with his QRC Outlaw Kart factory ride. Red Bluff closes it’s 2003 schedule with a big double point night on December 20th. Sponsorship from R F McDonald Company, O.H.I. Company, United Rentals and Vito Trucking allows the 8 race traveling series to pay a $12,000 point fund to it’s three divisions of racers with each championship paying $1,000. Forced to borrow Chad Widener’s kart for the feature race after flipping spectacularly in the dash, Pete Johnston raced to third in the 30 lapper ahead of Josh Chartier and Michael Hubert III. Johnston finished fourth in points on the series, joining Mason, Daniel Becker and David Tarter as single race feature winners.

Because it was a QRC All Star Tour race, Red Bluff combined the open outlaw and open intermediate classes for the night and B McCain’s new track record paced a 76 kart field. Johnston was second quick at 8.489, incoming Red Bluff point leader Steven Gannon ran a 8.510 and Brian Eady ranked fourth with a 8.517. Sean Becker, Matt Menne, Hubert and Ryan Foster rounded out the top 8 qualifiers. David Lewallen was stripped of his sixth fast qualifying time when the officials discovered that Kyle Cattanach had wheeled the kart in that session. Both Johnston and Eady flipped in a wild trophy dash incident and young Fort Jones racer Menne won the dash ahead of S Becker and B McCain. With the large field, the track went to a six heat format, but only the top 60 qualifiers were allowed to race in the invert 5, take 2 heat races. At all other 7 QRC All Star Tour stops, the heat race action is straight up off the timed runs, but followed the Red Bluff format tonight. Robbie Berge beat Hubert and B McCain in the first heat race and T McCain outdueled Johnston and Foster in heat 2. Mason lost ground with an early tangle in heat 3 with Brett Miller, but emerged with the second transfer spot behind winner Mitch Mootz when Ryan Kaplan and S Gannon tangled dueling for 2nd coming off the final corner. Robbie Ritcheson flipped in heat 4 as Robbie Whitchurch won ahead of usual Open Intermediate racer Chadd Noland, wheeling a 250 cc machine in the 500 cc class. David Wilson beat S Becker and Open Intermediate point leader Justin Reinolds in heat 5. Open Intermediate rookie Adam Main won a wild heat 6. Josh Chartier got the second transfer as Menne and Keith Hill tangled in a duel for second. K Hill joined Kyle Cattanach as a flip victim. The final 4 starting spots in the A Main were determined in the 25 lap B Main. Previous week winner and incoming point leader S Gannon set the pace until he got tangled up with the lapped kart of Garet Morton on lap 24. S Gannon had to restart in the rear with B McCain the new leader. SRL Late Model rookie of the year Foster ran second ahead of Reinolds and Menne with Beau Perkins, USAC star Kaplan, previous QRC Tour race winner D Becker and Eric Gannon just missing transfers.

The QRC All Star Tour only awards points in the main event action with 100 to win, 95 for second and 90 for third along with five points to lead a lap. Mason led T McCain by 10 points and B McCain by 17 as the race started and he also started on the pole. T McCain was alongside in the invert 6 format that placed Whitchurch and Hubert in row 2 ahead of S Becker and Johnston. As a B Main transfer, B McCain lined up 13th. The race was restarted after a huge tangle in turn 2 ended the event for Oregon’s Noland. T McCain took a quick lead over Mason, Hubert and Whitchurch. The yellow again fell on lap 2 as Hubert, S Becker, Whitchurch and Mootz tangled. Berge was now third ahead of Wilson. Wilson took third from Berge on lap 6 as B McCain and S Becker battled their way up to the 4-5 slots on lap 7. When Reinolds spun on lap 9, Mason made slight contact as he raced to the caution flag losing 2nd and 3rd to Wilson and B McCain. Berge’s race ended on the restart when he spun and got clipped by Menne. Mason again lost spot when he got tangled up with a broken Reinolds on lap 12. Foster was now fourth and he took third from B McCain on lap 13. Foster suddenly lost power on lap 15 and B McCain was back in third. Johnston gained fourth on lap 17 as Main and Mootz tangled with Whitchurch getting out of shape. The race was red flagged on lap 18 when second place Wilson flipped in turn 1. He was unhurt, but B McCain and Johnston now occupied the 2-3 slots. Mason still had his eyes on the title as he ran in fourth. The flying B McCain made his outside groove pass on his younger brother T McCain in turn 2 on lap 21. Whitchurch spun for a lap 22 yellow flag and Mason’s championship hopes ended on the restart when he got out of shape and fell back in the pack. T McCain could only chase B McCain to the checkered flag, but that was enough to wrap up the series championship by the narrow margin. Johnston ran third ahead of Chartier, Hubert, Whitchurch, S Becker, Menne and Mason.

Beau Perkins won the C Main ahead of Cody Braund and Brent Hamilton as Cycleland Open Intermediate champion Richard Bailey flipped. Tyler Wolf broke while racing in 2nd. Open Intermediate racer Brett Miller won the D Main ahead of Chuck Herman, Keith Hill and Bailey. Michael Tarter was the E Main winner as Jason Schuppert ran second ahead of Tyler Schohr and heat race flip victim T Ritcheson. The karts that timed out of the top 60 ran in the F Main and Tyler Spath won that event ahead of Ray Johnson, Nevada’s Jay Dargert, John Highfill and Sally Long. Gene Cisco flipped in that event and Danny Tompkins had gotten upsidedown in time trials.

B McCain faces another pressure filled Saturday night as his Red Bluff championship duel with S Gannon and Whitchurch enters the big double point action on December 20.
