Saturday, December 13, 2003 Gomes, Kennemore win QRC All Star Tour fnales
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. -- Passing previous week winner Mason Moore on the outside on lap 10, Ryan Gomes from McKinleyville won the 25 lap season finale for the 125 Intermediate division of the prestigious QRC All Star Tour Saturday night at the Red Bluff Indoor track. It was his second feature win of the series, but Rudger Worley had already wrapped up the $1000 series championship going into the 8th leg of the schedule. Worley finished third in the A Main behind Moore. Gomes was not a regular on the series and was actually earning points for Cody Ambers in this event. With his second place finish, Moore wrapped up 2nd place in the rich series point fund and Nevada’s MacKena Bell nosed out Kyle Larson for third in points. Forced to start 14th in the A Main after placing second to Keith Bloom Jr in the B Main, Derek Kennemore used a victory in the 25 lap A Main for the Box Stocks to finish fourth in points on the traveling QRC All Star Tour schedule. Several early incidents allowed 7th row starters Bloom and Derek Kennemore to quickly climb to the front. Bloom was forced to start in the back row of the C Main after crashing twice in his heat race, but he transferred up to the back of the A Main grid. He started the 25 lapper knowing that he would have to finish 2nd and lead a lap to win the $1000 QRC title from Derek Copeland. He did manage the 2nd place finish from 13th starting spot, but never led a lap and finished four points back of Copeland, tied with Jason Mittry for 2nd. Copeland now races in the 125 class, but brought his Box Stock out of mothballs for this race. His night ended with a 5th place run in the C Main, but closest challenger Mittry only gained a few points when his night ended with a 9th in the B. That left Bloom as the only driver with a shot at overtaking Copeland. Bloom started the night 44 points back of Copeland and made up 40 points of that margin with his busy night. Sponsorship from R F McDonald Company, O.H.I. Company, United Rentals and Vito Trucking allows the 8 race traveling series to pay a large $12,000 point fund to it’s three divisions.
There were 27 entries in the 125 Intermediate class and incoming Red Bluff point leader Kyle Larson set fast time for a second straight week with his 8.845 clocking. Surprising Shane Graham was second at 8.996 and Derek O’Bannon ran a 9.017 for third slot. Worley was fourth at 9.049 and Copeland ranked fifth with his 9.114 effort. Copeland won the dash ahead of O’Bannon and Larson. Copeland also beat Larson and Chico star Justin Grant in the first heat. Cody Miller flipped in his duel with Grant for 2nd. Dillon Silverman won heat 2 over Gomes and Bradley Terrell. Jonny Lentz won heat 3 ahead of Moore and O’Bannon. Brian Southers outraced Worley and Lakeport female racer Kayla Mincey in heat 4. In that race, Jacob Park had a hard flip and Robert Marcos also got upsidedown. The top 3 finishers in each heat moved into the 25 lap A Main, leaving a full field to battle for four transfers out of the 20 lap B Main. Graham led all 20 laps from the pole to win the B Main ahead of the Nevada based duo of Bell and Tom Purcell. Amanda Reinolds got the final transfer slot ahead of Park, Christopher Phillips and Miller. Marcos flipped for a second time in this race. The 16 kart A Main had a six kart inversion of the heat race transfers putting Moore and Gomes on the front row with O’Bannon and Larson in row 3. Seeking a second straight feature win, Princeton’s Moore took an early lead over Gomes and Worley. Silverman and Larson tangled for a lap 3 yellow flag. Grant and Southers raced into the 4-5 slots on lap 6. Gomes made his impressive outside pass for the lead on lap 10. While Gomes, Moore, Worley and Southers held onto the top four slots, fifth was traded between Grant, Lentz and Copeland. Four more cautions slowed the action in the last half of the race, but Gomes stayed out front for the win. Grant finished fifth ahead of Purcell, Terrell, Bell, Lentz and Larson. The Red Bluff point fight remains tight among Worley, Larson, Moore, Copeland and Gomes and the December 20th double point race carries much importance.
The Box Stock count grew to 40 karts for the QRC All Star Tour finale. Mittry opened the night with fast time honors as he ran a 10.076 lap. Derek Kennemore had a 10.216 and Chase Hill was third at 10.228. Cycleland champion Brad Patchen and Bloom rounded out the quick five. Bloom won the dash ahead of Mittry and Dustin Jenkins. The four heat races used invert 5 lineups with only the top 3 advancing. Bloom was forced to his C Main assignment by crashing in his bid to take the lead on lap 10 of the 12 lap first heat race. Seth Nunes won the heat ahead of Tyler Reddick and Andy Menne. Kenny Allen beat Nevada Zachary Heinz and Jacob Miller in heat 2 while Ukiah’s Andrew Anderson celebrated his 10th birthday with a win in heat 3 over Leana Kenyon and Doug Kennemore. Top runners Copeland and Patchen both spun early in heat 4 as Wyatt Pruitt beat Nicholas Bellamy and Jonathan Hoheisel. Bloom faced a daunting task in the C Main as he lined up last with top runners Mittry, Patchen, Hill and Copeland in the front two rows and only four transfer slots available. Bloom managed to make a late race move around Copeland for that 4th slot behind winner Mittry, Patchen and Hill. Copeland’s championship hopes appeared to be dashed, but Mittry failed to make it out of the B Main. Copeland started the night 12 points ahead of Mittry and 44 in front of Bloom. Chico racer Jake Cartwright flipped in the C Main. Bloom really put on a show in the B Main coming from 16th to take the lead from Jenkins on lap 17. Bloom won the 25 lapper ahead of Derek Kennemore, Jenkins and R J Johnson as top runners Patchen, Hill, Tristan Miller, Raymond Close and Mittry all missed the transfer. Mittry’s 9th left him 4 points back of Copeland. Jenkins led Derek Kennemore for 16 laps before Bloom passed them both on the outside in lapped traffic.
The A Main had to be restarted twice as front row starters Nunes and Bellamy had problems getting the action going. Finally, a lap was scored with fifth starter Menne pacing the first 10 rounds. Reddick took second from J Miller on lap 2 and Derek Kennemore was third in just 3 laps. Bloom raced into fourth on lap 4. J Miller was out after a tangle with Jenkins. Derek Kennemore passed Reddick for 2nd on lap 7. After leading 10 laps, Menne spun for a lap 11 yellow with Derek Kennemore the new leader over Reddick, Bloom, Heinz and Doug Kennemore. Desperate to get in front for one lap, Bloom finally was able to wrestle second from Reddick on lap 21, but the final 14 laps were run without a caution. Derek Kennemore posted the win ahead of Bloom, Reddick, Heinz, Doug Kennemore, Johnson, Anderson, Jenkins and Bellamy. Reddick finished fifth behind champion Copeland, the tied duo of Mittry and Bloom and 4th place Derek Kennemore in the final QRC All Star Tour standings. Bloom and Derek Kennemore are dueling for the Red Bluff point title and the December 20th double point action will carry much meaning.
