Saturday, December 20, 2003 Larson, Bloom, Allison and Baker win Red Bluff Specials
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. -- Sporting Corning Ford colors for one night to give them representation in the 125 class, track point leader Kyle Larson from Elk Grove led all 30 laps to win the A Main event Saturday night as the Red Bluff Indoor winter season concluded the 2003 portion of their 2003-2004 schedule. Track sponsor Benny Brown’s Corning Ford-Mercury-Kia awarded an extra $50 to all the A Main winners on this holiday special. Larson had his string of fast times snapped, but his fifth fast effort placed him outside front row in the dash and feature and he drove to wins in both. Last week’s QRC All Star Tour feature winner, Ryan Gomes from McKinleyville ran second ahead of 10th starting Dillon Silverman. The Box Stock division was given a special 40 lap distance for their holiday race and series point leader Keith Bloom Jr drove around QRC All Star Tour feature winner Derek Kennemore on the outside on lap 24 for the win. Derek Kennemore placed second ahead of Corning Ford sponsored Tyler Reddick, who earned fast time honors. With all the divisions chasing double points on this night, Cyle Allison’s 30 lap Beginner Box Stock win was especially significant as he started the night 31 points behind point leader Kellcy Bell. The Carson City NV based K Bell finished 9th as she lost a lap when she was spun out of fourth behind substitute racer Devin Lee. A ugly last lap incident found the finish reverting to lap 29 with Tony Marcos awarded second ahead of Tyler Seavey. Usual Shasta Speedway pavement street stock racer Neil Gordon appeared to be headed to the win in the 25 lap F200 feature, but flipped when he tangled with the lapped kart of Alyssa Hogan on lap 24. Paul Baker inherited the lead and posted the win ahead of point leader Clarence Marshall and Robert Norman.
Jonny Lentz was the quickest of 20 125 Intermediates in time trials with a 9.008 lap as he just nipped the 9.046 of Silverman, the 9.059 of Mason Moore and the 9.060 of Gomes. Larson’s 9.072 run was only good for fifth quick. Larson beat Lentz in the dash. The top 3 finishers from the three heat races advanced to the A Main. Gomes beat Derek O’Bannon in heat 1 and QRC All Star Tour champion Rudger Worley edged out Larson and Amanda Reinolds in heat 2. QRC All Star Tour Box Stock champion Derek Copeland spun leading on the final lap of heat 3 and Shane Graham gained that win ahead of M Moore. The B Main saw Lentz spin while leading, but he battled back to finish third behind winner Silverman and Michael Forslund. The top five transferred with Copeland fourth ahead of Christopher Phillips. The 14 kart A Main used a four kart inversion out of the heat race transfers and that put Graham and Larson on the front row. The talented field ran 24 straight green flag laps and Larson charged into the lead. Gomes took second from Graham on lap 2 and just 8 laps into the race, Larson held a large 1/3 lap lead. Worley took third from Graham on lap 11 and Silverman was fourth a lap later. The first caution came on lap 24 as third place duelers Worley, Graham and Lentz tangled. On the restart, Reinolds, O’Bannon and Phillips got together, but Larson kept his cool and stayed out front for the victory. Gomes ran second ahead of Silverman, 11th starter Forslund, MacKena, Worley, Lentz and M Moore. The double point performance increased Larson’s point lead over Worley from the 8 that he held at the start of the night to nearly 40 points, but six races remain.
The 32 Box Stocks were paced in time trials by the 10.179 run of Reddick. Jason Mittry ran a 10.223 and Chase Hill a 10.257. Bloom was fourth quick ahead of Jacob Miller and Cycleland Champion Brad Patchen. The clean racing displayed by this class is rewarded as they are the only class allowed to race 16 karts in their feature action. This allows three transfers from each of the four heat races. Bloom beat Patchen and Mittry in the dash. The invert 4 heat races saw wins going to Oregon based Seth Nunes, Wyatt Pruitt, Hill and Andy Menne. Jesse Red moved into the kart wheeled to the QRC All Star Tour title by Derek Copeland, but spun leading heat 4 and finished third. The final four A Main slots came from the B Main and Doug Kennemore won that event ahead of J Miller, Ukiah’s Andrew Anderson and Eureka’s Riley King. Nicholas Bellamy spun leading and was hit by Jonathan Hoheisel. Matthew Morrison won the C Main ahead of Trevor Tennison and Bryanna Powers. There was a six kart inversion at the front of the 16 kart grid for the 40 lap special A Main. Coming off his big win the previous week, Derek Kennemore raced into the lead and paced the first 15 rounds. Patchen settled into second ahead of Mittry and Bloom gained fourth when King, Patchen, Reddick and Hill got together on lap 8. The race was redflagged on lap 13 as Patchen clipped a spun David Chaves and flipped. Red also got upsidedown in the incident. Mittry dove underneath Derek Kennemore on lap 16 to take the lead, but Derek Kennemore came back with an inside pass in turn 1 on lap 23 to regain the lead. On lap 24, Mittry spun in turn 2 and Bloom used an outside pass to take the lead from Derek Kennemore. The final 16 laps were raced without a caution as Bloom won ahead of Derek Kennemore, Reddick, Menne, Anderson, Hill, Doug Kennemore, Patchen and Mittry.
Setting fast time for the 7th time in 8 races, K Bell paced 26 Beginner Box Stocks with her 11.698 run. Third ranked Tyler Seavey ran a 11.700 and previous week feature winner Jake Morgan ran a 11.934. David Lee, Allison and Thomas Bellamy also broke into the 11’s. Logan Seavey was hospitalized during the week and missed the action, replaced by substitute Devin Lee. Bellamy beat Morgan in the dash. Heat winners were Allison, Bellamy, Devin Lee and Chase Majdic. It was the first win of Majdic’s rookie season. Devin Lee gained his win when Morgan was penalized for a jump start. Morgan ended up missing the A Main as he tangled with the lapped car of Keyler Heinze while leading the B Main and could only scramble back to a 6th behind winner David Lee, Wesley Dougherty, Bryce Perry, Logan Taylor and Lain Baker. Jake Back won the C Main ahead of L Baker and Bailey Noland. In the special 30 lap A Main, Allison gained the lead when pacesetter T Bellamy spun on lap 2. T Seavey settled into second ahead of Marcos and T Bellamy. K Bell used a contact pass to take third from Marcos on lap 11. When the lapped kart of Brandon White forced T Seavey high on lap 15, K Bell briefly gained second, but K Seavey took it back on lap 16. Marcos also passed K Bell for third and K Bell lost a lap when a tap from Devin Lee sent her spinning without a caution on lap 19. Allison was never threatened and second place duelers Marcos, T Seavey, David Lee, Devin Lee all got tangled in the final corners. The officials reverted the official finish to lap 29 with Allison winning ahead of Marcos, T Seavey, David Lee, Dougherty, Devin Lee and T Bellamy.
The F200 entry fell back to 8 karts. Most of the racers in this class are adults, but 13 year old Alyssa Hogan timed in second quick behind Jeremy Zirkle. Zirkle ran a 10.882 lap and Hogan had a 11.181. Point leader Marshall was third quick and previous week feature winner Mike Larson ranked fourth. Larson allowed Cycleland Speedway owner and formerly nationally ranked motorcycle racer Lowell Moural to race his kart in the dash and Moural ran fifth behind winner Baker and runnerup Marshall. Zirkle was impressive in the heat race as he came from last to lead in five laps and won by a half lap over teammate Gary Gabel and Robert Norman. M Larson spun for a first lap caution in the A Main and the field then ran 23 straight green flag laps. Baker and Gabel each paced a lap before Gordon put the Kenny Bellamy kart out front. Baker retook second from Gabel on lap 5 and Marshall was third on lap 7. M Larson rebounded to fifth behind Norman on lap 17. Both Baker and Marshall had closed to the rear nerf of Gordon when he got tangled up with Hogan and flipped on lap 24 of the feature. Gordon had to restart in the rear and Baker drove to the win ahead of Marshall, Norman, M Larson and Hogan.
