Foster and Hamilton score perpetual trophy wins

RED BLUFF, Calif. -- In early January each season, the outlaw kart racers at the Red Bluff Indoor Winter Season race a perpetual trophy night where each of the feature winners gain possession of a six foot tall trophy for one year. If a driver wins the event three times, they get permanent possession of the prestigious trophy. SRL late model rookie of the year Ryan Foster wheeled the Kevin Majdic open outlaw kart to victory Saturday night in the 30 lap A Main. Foster opened the night by timing in 8th quick and placing 2nd in his heat race. Foster ended his late model season in 2003 with a big win in the Win River 150 at Shasta Speedway. Looking forward to his first full season in the winged sprint cars in Medford, Matt Menne from Fort Jones enjoyed a huge night as he won the dash after timing in 5th quick. Menne chased Foster across the finish line in the 30 lapper and previous week winner Sean Becker was third ahead of Tom Hubert, whose Nextel Cup duties again allowed him to race a Red Bluff night. A veteran road racer in the karting ranks but with limited time in an outlaw kart, Brent Hamilton has enjoyed a great 2003-2004 winter season in the Open Intermediate class. He outraced point leader Justin Reinolds for the big trophy in the Open Intermediate A Main after earlier winning both the dash and his heat race. Hamilton was sixth quick. Reinolds added to his point advantage with another solid night as he threatened his own track record while setting fast time, won his heat and placed 2nd to Hamilton in both the dash and feature. Carson City NV's Tom Purcell returned after an absence and ran third ahead of Tyler Ritcheson.

The great track conditions that the teams have seen in all the December and January events continued with Open Outlaw point leader Brian McCain again threatening track record times as he posted quick time for the 53 teams at 8.287. Pete Johnston was just a tick back at 8.294. Steven Gannon ran a 8.381 and S Becker paced the 9 drivers who ran in the 8.4 second bracket at 8.406. Menne beat Gannon in the dash. With the large field, the five heat races that transfer just the top two finishers into the A Main are highly competitive as the faster qualifiers have to line up in the 5th spot. B McCain again made it from fifth to win heat 1 over Kyle Cattanach. Young David Wilson won heat 2 ahead of Oregon's Richard Weststeyn and Keith Hill edged out Foster in heat 3. T Hubert timed in 19th quick and turned a front row start into a win in heat 4 ahead of Cycleland Speedway champion Daniel Becker. Robbie Ritcheson became the 4th driver to win from outside front row in the five heat races when he outraced Menne in heat 5. As always, the B Main was stacked with fast timers as they chased four available transfer slots. S Becker fought off S Gannon to win the B with both Michael Hubert III and Josh Chartier also transferring. Just missing the move forward were Robbie Whitchurch and 12th starting Beau Perkins. Perkins had finished 2nd in the C Main behind QRC All Star Tour champion Tyler McCain. Santa Rosa's Kirk Simpson ran third ahead of Clarence Reddick. A heat race incident forced 2nd quick Pete Johnston to race in the D Main and he won ahead of Shawn Amos and Chuck Herman. Johnston's night ended when he could only advance to 7th in the C Main. Josh Zander won the E Main ahead of Tyler Schaaf and Jason Schuppert. The champion of a new outlaw kart series in Missouri, Jay Reynolds joined the Red Bluff action for the first time and wheeled one of the QRC house karts to an 11th place finish in the D Main. The always intense A Main action found 14 outlaw karts lined up for the 30 lap distance. Racing the Red Bluff season in someone else's equipment for the first time, Foster drove to the exciting win ahead of Menne, S Becker, T Hubert, S Gannon, Wilson, Cattanach and D Becker. B McCain had tough luck and settled for an 11th place finish, but maintains a large point lead with just four events remaining on the schedule as they race Jan 17th and the first three Saturdays in February.

Paradise resident Reinolds continued his complete domination of Open Intermediate time trials as his 8.302 lap threatened his own track record and would have ranked as third quick in the large Open Outlaw class. Coming off his big win of the previous weekend, Garrett Mills was second quick at 8.491 ahead of Brett Miller's 8.511. The dash field was rounded out by the 250 wheeled by Oregon's Chadd Noland, Micah Parmer and Hamilton. Front row starter Hamilton edged out sixth starting Reinolds in the dash. The 20 karts were divided into two heat races. Reinolds won the first ahead of Purcell and B Miller. Hamilton was chased to the checkered flag in heat 2 by Cody Braund and Steven Rogers. The top five in each heat advanced into the A Main and Mills just missed with a sixth. Mills again had problems in the B Main and his night was over with Chad Widener capturing the B Main ahead of T Ritcheson, Taylor Simas and Kayla Thain. Hamilton then won the 14 kart A Main ahead of Reinolds, Purcell, Ritcheson, Noland, B Miller, Simas, visitor Bradley Terrell and Rogers.
