Foster and Parmer win Red Bluff features

RED BLUFF, Calif. -- One of the many racers who use the Red Bluff Indoor Winter Season as a chance to return to their outlaw kart racing roots, Ryan Foster from Redding captured Saturday night's A Main event for the open outlaw division. Foster was rookie of the year with the SRL Late Models in 2003 and hopes to challenge for that championship in 2004 coming off his big win in the Win-River Casino 150 at Shasta Speedway last October. Driving for kart owner Kevin Majdic this season, Foster timed in third quick, ran third in the dash and second in his heat. He turned the quickest laps in the 30 lap feature as he led Southern Oregon racer Joe Weststeyn and USAC open wheel star Ryan Kaplan to the checkered flag. With just a Feb 21 race remaining on the schedule, defending track champion Brian McCain pretty much wrapped up the 2003-2004 title with another solid night capped by an 8th place finish. In the Open Intermediate action, Micah Parmer got his first win of the season with Cody Braund second ahead of Garrett Mills. Like Foster, Parmer has many laps in a Legend Car during the outdoor racing season and he timed in sixth fast, ran second in the dash and his heat prior to his feature win. Justin Reinolds continued enroute to the division championship by again setting fast time, winning his heat and placing sixth in the main event.

Pete Johnston was the quickest of the 40 entries in the Open Outlaw class with his 8.312 lap. B McCain ranked second at 8.385 and Foster ran a 8.424. Steven Gannon, David Wilson, Sean Becker and Kaplan were also in the 8 second bracket. Wilson turned a front row start into a dash win as S Becker ran second ahead of Foster. The track was very racy for the five heat races as most of the top qualifiers were able to get into the two transfer spots out of each. Red Bluff inverts five karts in each heat and only transfers the top two. Josh Chartier beat S Becker in heat 1 and J Weststeyn won heat 2 ahead of B McCain. Matt Menne and Foster were 1-2 in heat 3 and Gannon beat Michael Tarter in heat 4. Wilson ran second behind Jason Schuppert in heat 5. Problems placed fast timer Johnston 8th in heat 1 and that forced him into the D Main action. Johnston managed to win both the D and C Main events, but a 10th place run in the B Main ended his night.
Tyler Wolf and Michael Hubert III were 2-3 n the D Main and Hubert also advanced through the C Main action with a third behind Richard Weststeyn. Chico winner John Bunch made a quick tow north and tagged the back of the D Main, but his 11th place finish ended a brief Red Bluff experience for him. The B Main is always hotly contested as 14 racers dueled for the final four transfers into the 30 lap A Main. Beau Perkins won ahead of Kaplan, Robbie Whitchurch and Kyle Cattanach. Just missing the transfers were QRC All Star Tour champion Tyler McCain, Daniel Becker and the busy Hubert. The 30 lapper saw an early race tangle that involved 12 of the 14 starters and forced several teams to later be eliminated on the two caution rule. Foster's quick lap in the feature was a 8.732 effort and second place J Weststeyn's quickest tour was a 8.864. Kaplan ran third and S Becker was the only other racer to break into the 8.7's with his fourth place run. Gannon, Chartier, Schuppert, B McCain, Cattanach and Perkins rounded out the top ten finishers.

Reinolds led the 20 Open Intermediate qualifiers with his 8.461 lap and previous week winner Chadd Noland ran a 8.533. Brent Hamilton was third at 8.577. Brett Miller, Garrett Mills, Parmer and Chris Webber all timed into the 8.7 second bracket. Outside front row starter Mills won the dash ahead of Parmer and Reinolds. Reinolds won the first heat, but had to use a late race pass to beat Carson City, NV racer Mackena Bell. Bell was making her first run with her new 500 cc powered machine and she paced the first 8 laps of the ten lap race. Bell placed second ahead of sprint car racer Webber. Female racer Reyna Krueger won heat 2 in front of Parmer and Noland. With JoJo Helberg and Peter Lawrence tagging the back after racing earlier in the afternoon in Chico, the B Main had 12 starters chasing four transfers. Hamilton won ahead of Tyler Ritcheson, Steven Rogers and Helberg. Only two racers managed to get lap times in the 8's in the feature as winner Parmer's best lap was a 8.888 and third place Mills had a best of 8.884. Braund ran second ahead of Mills, Noland, Hamilton, Reinolds, Bell and T Ritcheson.
