Saturday, February 21, 2004 First win for Hubert, Reinolds adds another
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. -- Having enjoyed great success in his Legend Car during the 2003 outdoor racing season, Michael Hubert III got his first Open Outlaw Kart feature win of the 2003-2004 Winter Indoor Season at the Red Bluff Fairgrounds on Saturday night as he fended off the challenges of Kyle Cattanach and Ryan Kaplan. This was the final race of the season and Brian McCain successfully defended his Open Outlaw track title despite finishing 11th in the B Main on the night. Justin Reinolds finished off his track championship season in the Open Intermediate division in spectacular fashion as only the dash win eluded him. The Paradise driver again outttimed all of the Opens as he paced qualifying and he won his heat race prior to his feature win. Point runnerup Chadd Noland from Oregon was second in the feature ahead of Brent Hamilton and Cody Braund.
Sean Becker was the quickest of the 51 Open Outlaws in time trials with a 8.496 lap. B McCain was right behind at 8.568 and both Steven Gannon and Michael Tarter ran 8.624 second laps. Pete Johnston had a 8.627 and Tyler McCain rounded out the dash field with his 8.641. Hubert was 23rd quick. Johnston won the dash from the pole with B McCain second. The five heat races advance just the top two finishers in each into the 30 lap A Main. Cattanach beat T McCain in heat 1 and Oregon's Joe Weststeyn won heat 2 ahead of Kaplan. Hubert and Tyler Wolf were 1-2 in heat 3 and Robbie Ritcheson beat kart builder Dean Bare in heat 4. Jason Schuppert and Richard Weststeyn got the 1-2 slots in heat 5. Only two of the 12 fastest karts made the transfer out of the heat action leading to a stacked B Main with just four transfer spots available. Gannon won the B Main ahead of Matt Menne, Keith Hill and Johnston as Daniel Becker and M Tarter just missed transferring. Fast timer S Becker was 14th, David Wilson 13th and champion B McCain 11th. D Becker and Wilson had finished 1-2 in the C Main ahead of Blake Donaldson and Robbie Whitchurch. Whitchurch won the D Main in front of Beau Perkins, Kyle Hirst and Aaron Colburn while Hirst beat Troy Combs and David Lewallen in the E Main. Hubert's quickest lap in the 30 lap A Main was an 8.843 while feature runnerup Cattanach posted the quickest time at 8.722. Third place Kaplan had a best lap of 8.919. Menne finished fourth ahead of Johnston, Ritcheson, Wolf, J Weststeyn, Bare and T McCain.
Reinolds was the quickest of the 22 Open Intermediates as his 8.455 lap beat all of the Open Outlaws also. Noland was second at 8.605 and Hamilton posted a 8.612. Brett Miller ranked fourth ahead of Garrett Mills. In just her second run in her new 500 cc machine, Nevada female racer Mackena Bell timed in sixth quick at 8.740 and she won the dash from the pole as Mills and Hamilton chased her to the checkered flag. The larger than usual field saw a three heat format with the top 3 in each moving into the A Main. Reinolds won heat 1 over Adam Main and William Lyons. Braund beat Noland and Alex Cartwright in heat 2 and Nevada's Tom Purcell won heat 3 ahead of Reyna Krueger and Hamilton. Mills was the B Main winner with Miller second ahead of Micah Parmer and Thomas Bruckenstein. Five karts advanced so Tyler Ritcheson calimed the last A Main starting slot. Reinolds charged to the win in the A Main and posted the quickest time with his 8.701 clocking, again faster than Open Outlaw ran in their main event. Runnerup Noland's best lap was an 8.809 and third place Hamilton clicked off a best of 8.714. Braund finished fourth ahead of Parmer, Ritcheson, Purcell, Main, Cartwright and Miller.
The Red Bluff banquet will be March 13 and the outdoor season will open with the first race on the QRC All Star Tour on March 27 at Cycleland Speedway . Cycleland has a practice day slated for March 20.
