Saturday, October 26, 2002 Schaaf rebounds for Red Bluff win

(Oct. 26, 2002) - After having a tough opening night where he failed to get out of the D Main, Tyler Schaaf rebounded with an A Main feature win Saturday night in round 2 of the 2002-2003 Red Bluff Indoor Winter Season. Beau Perkins ran second and Sean Becker moved into the season point lead with a third place finish. His younger brother Nic Helwig having won the season opener for the 125 class, Yuba City’s Michael Helwig won the Open Intermediate A Main ahead of Micah Parmer and Austin VanKeuren. Alan Ambers came out on top of the 125 Intermediate A feature with Cycleland champion Matt DiBenedetto from Grass Valley second ahead of point leader Brett Miller. B Miller is just 3 points ahead of DiBenedetto. Taking the lead on a restart with just 3 laps to go, Cycleland Pro Box Stock champion Brian Southers from Paradise won his second straight Box Stock A Main with Cycleland Box Stock champion Kyle Larson second. Derek Kennemore ran third. Nevada racers Kelloy Bell and Jay Primm were 1-2 in the Beginner Box Stock A Main with Jacob Miller third. Bell and Primm are now 3-4 in points behind point leader Tyler Reddick and Casey McClain.
With an 8.999 lap, S Becker was the quickest of the 60 Open Outlaw entries. Steven Gannon ran a 9.041 and opening night winner Daniel Becker was third at 9.068. Brian McCain got a 9.075 and Cycleland champion Ryan Kaplan turned a 9.127. B McCain beat S Becker in the dash. The usual five heat races each moved just the top 2 finishers into the 25 lap A Main. Perkins and S Becker were 1-2 in heat 1 with Kevin Juvenal edging Shaun Klobas in heat 2. Veteran C W Tiner won heat 3 with D Becker second. Nevada’s Jay Dargert won heat 4 ahead of David Fowler. Zack Mason and Schaaf were 1-2 in heat 5. The final four A Main slots are determined in the 20 lap B Main and Ryan Foster beat Tyler McCain, Scott Heninger and B McCain in that affair with Aaron Colburn and Clint York just missing transfers. B McCain had won the C Main ahead of Oregon’s Brandon Farquhar and Kaplan. Kyle Cattanach beat Gannon and Jason Webb in the D Main. Webb beat Kyle Hirst in the E Main and Hirst won the F Main ahead of newcomer Kirk Michael. Schaaf was one second ahead of Perkins at the end of the 25 lap A Main with S Becker another half-second back in third. B McCain ran fourth as the top seven finished on the lead lap with D Becker fifth ahead of Juvenal, Fowler, Mason and Heninger. In just the first two weeks, S Becker has built a solid 14 point lead on brother D Becker with B McCain 9 more points back in third.
Cody Braund was the quickest of 25 Open Intermediate entries with a 9.196 lap. Parmer clicked off a 9.255 and opening night winner Michael Hubert III a 9.270. M Helwig was fourth at 9.299. Hubert beat VanKeuren in the dash. Three heat races with three transfers out of each. Garet Morton beat Braund in heat 2 with Parmer edging David Wilson in heat 2. Michael Tarter and VanKeuren were 1-2 in heat 3. Four transfers from the B Main as Cycleland champion Quintin Cyre won with Hubert second ahead of Reyna Krueger. 12 year old M Helwig was the feature winner ahead of Parmer, VanKeuren, Braund, Wilson, Krueger and Taylor Simas. Hubert holds a 9 point lead over Parmer with Tarter one more point back in third.
Chris Webber was the quickest of the 28 125’s with a 9.328 lap. Division newcomer Mason Moore ran a 9.354 and Napa’s Richard Bailey was third at 9.380. Brett Miller and Oregon’s Chadd Noland rounded out the quick five. Matt DiBenedetto beat B Miller and Webber in the dash. Three heats with three transfers each. B Miller beat Webber in heat 1 with Cody Miller edging Noland in heat 2. Tyler Wolf and Nevada’s Tom Purcell were 1-2 in heat 3. Four transfers from the B Main where Moore beat opening night winner Nic Helwig, Kayla Thain and C Main winner Bailey. Bailey had been trailed in the C by Thomas Griffin and Brent Hamilton. Alan Ambers won the A Main ahead of DiBenedetto, B Miller, Noland, Wolf, C Miller, Bailey, Moore and Thain. N Helwig and Moore are tied for third in points, 8 behind point leader B Miller.
Opening night winner Southers was the quickest of 35 Box Stocks with a 10.016 lap. Jesse Red ran a 10.063 and Keith Bloom Jr a 10.064. Derek Kennemore posted a 10.079. Raymond Close beat Derek Kennemore in the dash. Four heats with three transfers each. Jonny Lentz edged Southers in heat 1 with Close beating Alexis Crowell in heat 2. Larson outraced Bloom in heat 3 and a duel of Derek’s in heat 4 saw Derek Copeland win with Derek Kennemore second. The final four transfers came from the B Main and Ukiah’s Andrew Anderson won with Mackena Bell second ahead of Jon Phillips and Red. Red had won the C Main ahead of Thomas Bruckenstein, Phillips and Chase Hill. Larson was setting the pace in the A Main when he got passed by Southers on a restart with just 3 laps to run in the 25 lapper. Larson ran second ahead of Derek Kennemore, Bloom, Anderson, Close, Bell and Andy Menne. Southers has exploded to a huge 22 point lead over Close with Larson and Derek Kennemore tied for third, 2 more points back.
Tyler Reddick paced 39 Beginner Box Stocks in time trials with a 11.103 lap. For the second straight week, the five division show threatened to top the 190 entry mark. McClain was second at 11.193 as they easily paced the 11.430 turned in by Primm. Nicholas Bellamy and Cameron Bartlett rounded out the quick five. Bellamy beat Bartlett in the dash. Bell and Primm were 1-2 in the 25 lap A Main with the top 11 finishers on the lead lap. J Miller ran third ahead of Wyatt Pruitt, Trevor Tennison, Jason Mittry, Reddick and Tristan Miller. Reddick had to battle through the B Main that he won ahead of Pruitt, T Miller and J Miller. Bryce Perry beat T Miller and Wyatt Finley in the C Main. Tyler Seavey captured the D Main with Finley second ahead of Tanner Thomson. Reddick ended the night with an 8 point lead on McClain with Bell 12 more points back. Primm and 6 year old J Miller round out the top five in points. RESULTS
