Saturday, November 9, 2002 QRC All Star Tour ends season in Red Bluff
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. (Nov. 9, 2002) - Round four of Red Bluff's Winter Indoor season also served as the finale for the QRC All Star Tour 2002 schedule Saturday night. Brandon Farquhar from Medford, OR led the final 29 laps of the 30 lap A Main for the Open Outlaws while defending series champion Sean Becker wrapped up the 2002 title with a 2nd place finish. Cassie Thain used a 3rd place run to move into 10th in the final point standings. Justin Reinolds won the 25 lap 125 Intermediate feature after taking the lead when race leaders Matt DiBenedetto and Alan Ambers tangled on lap 14. DiBenedetto was later eliminated on his second caution, but the Cycleland Speedway titlest also won the prestigious QRC Tour title by 71 points over Michael Helwig. M Helwig was fifth in the finale as Steven Rogers ran second over Bradley Terrell. Having seen his two race winning streak snapped at the previous race, Paradise's Brian Southers led the final 22 laps to win the 25 lapper for the Box Stocks. He also finished 2nd in the QRC Tour point chase to Cycleland Box Stock titlest Kyle Larson. Larson was 13th tonight. Sponsorship for the QRC All Star Tour came from United Rentals, R F MacDonald Company, OHI Company and the Jimmy Sills School of Open Wheel Racing and the three touring classes split a $12,000 point fund for the ten race series that competed in three different states.
The Open Outlaws filled the pit area with 62 entries for this night and Shasta Speedway Pro Stock titlest Kyle Cattanach was fast timer with his 8.813 lap. Brian McCain ran a 8.880 effort and another young successful Shasta Speedway racer, Steven Gannon, was third quick at 8.902. The fastest five all broke into the 8's with Daniel Becker running a 8.940 and Cycleland champion Ryan Kaplan a 8.955. S Becker was 6th quick and Farquhar ranked 17th. S Becker won the dash from the pole with Kaplan second. The race used the usual Red Bluff format so the top 50 qualifiers raced in the five heat races with the top two in each advancing into the 30 lap A Main. The fastest kart in each heat starts fifth as they use a 50% inversion. S Becker won the first heat from 4th starting with outside front row starter Thain second. Jeremy Webb won heat 2 from the pole and outside front row starter Farquhar was second. Mitch Mootz won heat 3 from the pole with 4th starter Robbie Whitchurch second. Outside front row starter Beau Perkins won heat 4 ahead of fifth starter D Becker. Shaun Klobas won heat 5 from the pole as Kyle Hirst battled from behind the inversion in sixth to place second. The final four A Main slots were determined in the B Main. Cattanach was on the pole for this race and he won with B McCain second over Ryan Foster and Clint York. Just missing the cut were Tyler McCain and Tyler Schaaf. T McCain had won the C Main with York second over Schaaf and Jasen Webb. Jasen Webb was the D Main winner in front of Jason Schuppert and David Fowler. Kevin Majdic took the E Main ahead of Fowler and Jay Dargert. The E Main used the karts who timed in 51st and higher and David Lewallen won that race ahead of Mickey Franco and Andy Cumpton.
The ten heat race transfers were half-inverted at the front of the 14 kart A Main. That put Farquhar and Thain on the front row. Thain led the opening lap over Farquhar and S Becker. D Becker took fourth from Whitchurch on lap 3. B McCain climbed from 12th to 5th, but lost the spot to Foster on lap 11. Mootz flipped for a lap 13 red flag. S Becker had passed Thain for 2nd on lap 11. B McCain was back to fifth on lap 19 as both Foster and Whitchurch had problems. The top drivers finished in that order with Farquhar fighting off the constant challenge of S Becker for the win. Thain ran third ahead of D Becker, B McCain, York, Foster, Jeremy Webb and Perkins. B McCain was earning points for Robbie Berge, but he fell short in his quest to overtake Kaplan and Whitchurch for 2nd in the QRC All Star Tour points. Kaplan finished one point ahead of Whitchurch and 22 in front of Berge. Gannon was fifth in points ahead of D Becker, Ukiah's Rick Schamber and Farquhar.
Oregon's Chadd Noland paced the 36 125's with a 9.064 lap. Brett Miller turned in a 9.175 and Bay Area long tow Terrell ranked third at 9.203. Another long tow Richard Bailey from Napa was fourth at 9.216 and Santa Rosa's Jessica Helberg turned in a 9.261. Sixth fast Chris Webber won the dash over Bailey and B Miller. The four heat races transferred three karts each. They used four kart inversions and outside front row starter A Ambers beat pole starter Nic Helwig and sixth starter Kayla Thain in heat 1. Pole starter M Helwig won the second heat ahead of outside front row starter DiBenedetto and Michael Hubert III. Terrell won heat 3 from 4th and outside front row starter Derek O'Bannon was second ahead of Rogers. Tyler Wolf won the 4th heat from the pole with third starter Reinolds second ahead of Bailey. The final 4 A Main slots were determined in the 16 kart B Main. B Miller won from the pole ahead of outside front row starter Webber, Cody Ambers and visitor Michael Forslund. Brent Hamilton won the C Main in front of Noland and Klint Simpson. Forced to come from 14th starting in the B Main, Noland just missed the transfer with a 5th ahead of Mason Moore. Again, the 12 heat race transfers were half-inverted at the front of the 16 kart A Main. That put DiBenedetto and A Ambers on the front row with Reinolds lined up third. Grass Valley's DiBenedetto raced into the lead over A Ambers and Reinolds. After they ran 1-2 for 13 laps, DiBenedetto and Ambers tangled and Reinolds was the new leader ahead of Rogers, Terrell and Bailey. Another caution late in the race ended the event for DiBenedetto as Reinolds charged to the win ahead of Rogers, Terrell, Bailey, M Helwig, N HelwigHubert and Wolf. DiBenedetto won the QRC Tour title by 71 points over M Helwig with N Helwig 17 more points back in third. Hubert finished just one point back of N Helwig and ten ahead of Reinolds. Bailey and Terrell rounded out the top 7 in points.
Jonny Lentz was the quickest of the 40 Box Stocks with his 10.083 qualifying run. Andy Menne turned in a 10.152 and Keith Bloom Jr a 10.170. Elk Grove residents Larson and Dustin Jenkins rounded out the top five. Jenkins won the dash with Bloom second ahead of Derek Kennemore. Again, four invert five heat races transferred three karts each to their 25 lap A Main. Outside front row starter Derek Copeland won the first heat ahead of fifth starter Lentz and pole starter Raymond Close. Southers took heat 2 from third starting as sixth starter Alexis Crowell ran second in front of Derek Kennemore. Bloom charged forward from fifth to take heat 3 ahead of 4th starter Thomas Bruckenstein and pole starter Brad Patchen. Oregon visitor Cory Lyon won heat 4 from 4th as Chase Hill ran second ahead of Christian Steele. The B Main transferred four karts forward and Larson won this race from the pole as Dillon Silverman ran second ahead of Garrett Mills and Andrew Anderson. Just missing transfers were last winter's Beginner Box Stock champion Doug Kennemore and Nevada's Mackena Bell. Jesse Red took the C Main with Andrew Cumpton second ahead of Jacob Miller. With 12 heat race transfers, the quickest six were inverted at the front of the 16 kart A Main. That put Southers and Lyon on the front row. Lyon beat Southers on the start and paced three laps before Southers nosed ahead. Derek Kennemore settled into third, but Bloom made a strong move from 6th into 3rd on lap 7. Bloom paced Lyon for 2nd on lap 9 and the 15 lap standings showed Southers leading Bloom, Lyon, Lentz, Close and Copeland. Lyon fell back in the closing rounds with Bloom hanging on for second. Close passed Lentz on lap 24 to finish third. Crowell was fifth ahead of Patchen, Lyon, Bruckenstein and Mills. Larson had clinched the title going into the night and finished with a 74 point lead on Southers. Bloom was third, 21 behind Southers and 30 ahead of Lentz. Close earned points for Moore tonight and put him fifth in the points ahead of Red and Derek Kennemore.
