Monday, December 9, 2002 Wolf, Bloom and Purcell win in Red Bluff
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. (Dec. 7, 2002) - Tyler Wolf from Redding beat fellow front row starter Nic Helwig on the initial green flag and he paced all 25 laps to win the 125 Intermediate A Main Saturday night as the Red Bluff Winter Indoor Season for the Outlaw Karts resumed with round six after a two week break for Thanksgiving. N Helwig finished second and point leader Matt DiBenedetto was third after setting fast time. Closing a little distance on point leader Brian Southers, Keith Bloom Jr took the lead on lap 11 when he and leader James Crowell tangled lapping Jennifer Purcell. Crowell spun and Bloom led the final 15 laps for the 25 lap Box Stock A Main win. Jesse Red finished second ahead of Andy Menne and Kyle Larson. Filling in for friend Jay Primm in the Beginner Box Stock action, six year old Jennifer Purcell from Carson City, NV got her first Red Bluff feature win as she won the 20 lap A Main from the pole. She actually lost the lead to Nicholas Bellamy on lap 10, but battled back to regain the top spot on lap 13. N Bellamy ran second ahead of Trevor Tennison. J Purcell was kept busy as she had to run the Box Stock B Main, Beginner A Main and Box Stock A Main in consecutive order.
DiBenedetto was the quickest of 24 125’s in time trials with his 9.080 lap. It was a big night for the Carson City based Purcell team as Tom Purcell timed second quick at 9.174. Oregon’s Chadd Noland ran a 9.204 lap with N Helwig and Wolf rounding out the quick five. Brett Miller won the dash from the pole ahead of Noland and Wolf. The top 3 in each heat advanced into the 25 lap A Main. Making his Red Bluff debut for the season, Cycleland Turkey Race winner Rudger Worley won the first heat over N Helwig and DiBenedetto after Alan Ambers spun leading. Napa’s Richard Bailey won heat 2 with Wolf second. Cody Miller captured heat 3 in front of Derek O’Bannon and Noland. Sebastapol’s Bradley Terrell arrived late after racing the day show in Chico, but won the C Main in front of Oregon’s R C Pinckney and Brandey Eiler. They transferred the top five from the 15 lap B Main. B Miller and T Purcell were 1-2 all the way. The Box Stock champion at Cycleland and on the prestigious QRC All Star Tour, Kyle Larson made his 125 debut filling in for Christopher Phillips and impressed with a third place finish ahead of Brent Hamilton and A Ambers. The inversion of the four fastest karts to make the A Main from the heat action put Wolf and N Helwig on the front row for their 25 lap feature. Wolf raced into the lead over N Helwig, Noland, DiBenedetto and Steven Rogers. A Ambers race ended with contact with the back wall on lap 10. Noland took second from N Helwig on the restart, but his kart was stalling on the yellow flags and it stalled under green on lap 15 to end his race. N Helwig regained second and stayed there with DiBenedetto passing Rogers on lap 20 to take third. Rogers ran fourth and T Purcell was fifth. Larson had actually climbed into fifth on lap 17, but the many laps forced by the double duty action took their toll and he faded to an 11th in the final 2 laps.
Red Bluff does their time trials by timing every lap of a couple hot lap sessions with the use of the transponders and Larson was the only one of the fast timers in the 34 kart Box Stock turnout to improve in the second session. That moved him into quick time honors with a 10.061 lap. Fellow Sacramento area racer Dustin Jenkins was second at 10.115 and Jonny Lentz had a 10.132 lap. On the previous Saturday, Larson had won features at both Chico and Cycleland on the same day and Lakeport winner Andrew Anderson was fourth quick ahead of defending champion Derek Kennemore. Derek Copeland won the dash in front of Kennemore and Jenkins. In a change, they elected to just take two transfers from the four heat races and add six karts from the B Main to set a 14 kart A Main as the previous races had had 16 A Main starters. Crowell beat Derek Kennemore in heat 1 with Red winning heat 2 over Dillon Silverman. Lentz and Raymond Close were 1-2 in heat 3 and Bloom won heat 4 ahead of Lakeport visitor Shane Theis after J Purcell spun leading. A Menne flipped in this race. Dylan Greenleaf won the D Main ahead of late arrival JoJo Owens and Shane Graham. Jenkins won the C Main with A Menne second ahead of Cory Lyon and the busy J Purcell. Larson won the 20 lap B Main from the pole with Anderson a race long second. Point leader Southers was third ahead of A Menne and J Purcell. The transfer order was shuffled when Doug Kennemore and Copeland tangled dueling for 4th in turn 3 of the last lap. The fastest four karts to make it out of the heat action were inverted at the front of the A Main grid and the race was restarted after a Silverman flip. Crowell raced into the lead over Bloom and Lentz. Close moved into third on lap 2 and the leaders tangled lapping J Purcell on lap 11. Crowell spun and Bloom gained the lead despite darting into the infield. Close gained second, but broke to end his race. Lentz lost a lap in the pits and Red was now second ahead of Larson. Larson and Silverman tangled to hand third to A Menne. Larson climbed back to fifth on lap 20 and both he and Anderson got by Silverman on lap 23. Silverman hit the front wall for a late yellow flag. Bloom won ahead of Red, Menne, Larson, Anderson, Southers and Lyon.
Casey McClain paced 36 Beginner Box Stocks with his 11.396 lap. His fellow point lead dueler Tyler Reddick was second at 11.437 and N Bellamy ran a 11.494. Cameron Bartlett had a 11.484 and J Purcell ranked fifth with a 11.486 effort in the foreign Primm ride. Reddick won the dash over previous race feature winner Wyatt Pruitt. The top 2 in each of the invert 4 heat races advanced into their 20 lap feature. Tyler Seavey and J Purcell gained the transfers out of heat 1 when Kenny Allen and Tony Marcos tangled dueling for first on the final round. Reddick beat Pruitt in heat 2 and N Bellamy battled back from a first lap tangle with Jason Mittry to win heat 3 ahead of Jonathan Hoheisel. Tennison won heat 4 with Bartlett second. Allen spun leading the D Main and McClain won that race ahead of Zach Rushing. The busy McClain then won the C Main with Wesley Dougherty second ahead of Jacob Miller and late arrival Wyatt Finley. Mittry led all 20 laps to win the B Main ahead of David Lee and McClain. Marcos and Tristan Miller were battling for the top spots when they got tangled up with the lapped car of Thomas Bellamy. With McClain forced to come through the preliminary features, the four kart inversion for the 20 lap feature put J Purcell and Bartlett on the front row. J Purcell raced into the lead over Bartlett, N Bellamy and Pruitt. Tennison gained fourth on lap 3 and N Bellamy got underneath Bartlett for 2nd on lap 7. The front foursome checked out and N Bellamy used an outside pass in traffic to take the lead from J Purcell on lap 10. J Purcell regained the top spot on lap 13 and beat N Bellamy to the only caution flag when McClain and Hoheisel tangled. Reddick leaped into fourth on the restart and he finished there as J Purcell ran flawlessly to her win. N Bellamy ran second ahead of Tennison, Reddick, Bartlett, Pruitt, Mittry and T Seavey.
