Saturday, December 14, 2002 Points leader DiBenedetto wins at Red Bluff
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. (Dec. 14, 2002) - Seeking to add the Red Bluff Indoor Winter Season championship to his 2002 titles at Cycleland Speedway and on the QRC All Star Tour, 11 year old Matt DiBenedetto from Grass Valley won the 25 lap 125 Intermediate A Main Saturday night. His team has announced that the QRC All Star Tour title will be the only point racing that they do in 2003 as they want to add some pavement road racing to Matt’s resume. Previous week winner Tyler Wolf led the first 20 laps, but bobbled in turn 4 and gave up the lead to DiBenedetto. Wolf ran second ahead of Nic Helwig and fast timer Brett Miller. Gaining the lead when pacesetter Jonny Lentz spun in turn 1 on lap 16, Anderson’s Derek Copeland won the 25 lap Box Stock A Main with previous week winner Keith Bloom Jr second ahead of point leader Brian Southers from Paradise. Southers is trying to add a Red Bluff title to the Cycleland Speedway Pro Box Stock title that he won this summer and is using the off weekends in the Red Bluff schedule to start his racing in the faster 125 Intermediate class at the Silver Dollar Speedway events. After finishing second in the previous two races, third ranked Nicholas Bellamy from Anderson led all 25 laps to win the Beginner Box Stock A Main. Casey McClain cut into Tyler Reddick’s point lead with a second ahead of Trevor Tennison with Corning’s Reddick fourth.
Chico’s B Miller paced the 22 125’s with a 9.262 effort that just nipped the 9.282 of Oregon’s Chadd Noland. DiBenedetto stood third at 9.346 and Napa’s Richard Bailey ended up fourth with a 9.407 run. Sixth quick Nic Helwig won the dash with DiBenedetto second ahead of Wolf. The three heat races each advanced the top 3. Derek O’Bannon beat B Miller in heat 1 with Nevada’s Tom Purcell winning heat 2 ahead of Noland and Wolf. Steven Rogers won heat 3 ahead of N Helwig and DiBenedetto. Bailey was dominating the 25 lap B Main when the lapped kart of Cody Ambers spun right in front of him on lap 13. Bailey came back to transfer with a fourth as Alan Ambers won ahead of Brent Hamilton and Mason Moore. William Lyons was a flip victim in the B Main. Noland had to pit several times on the pace laps for the 25 lap A Main and was sent to the rear of the field for the start. Wolf raced into the lead over DiBenedetto, N Helwig and B Miller. The quickly run event had just a single yellow flag on lap 5 when C Ambers spun. DiBenedetto was putting constant pressure on leader Wolf and Wolf finally bobbled coming off turn 4 on lap 21 to lose the top spot to DiBenedetto. Wolf salvaged a second ahead of N Helwig, B Miller, Purcell, Cody Miller, Noland, Rogers and Bailey.
Sacramento’s Dustin Jenkins paced 28 Box Stocks with a 10.194 qualifying run. Lentz had a 10.260 effort and Copeland was third quick at 10.304. Southers and Andrew Anderson rounded out the quick five. Anderson was celebrating his 9th birthday. Using an inside pass at the white flag, Southers won the dash over defending champion Derek Kennemore. The three heat races advanced the top 3 into the 25 lap A Main. Raymond close beat Southers in heat 1 with Lentz on top of 2001-2002 season Beginner Box Stock champion Doug Kennemore in heat 2. Chase Hill beat Brad Patchen in heat 3. There were five transfers from the 25 lap B Main. Jenkins led the first 13 laps from the pole only to get collected in a tangle with Jennifer Purcell and Andrew Cumpton. This handed the lead to Derek Kennemore who won ahead of Bloom. Bloom passed Anderson late in the race for second and Anderson was third ahead of Jesse Red and Dillon Silverman. Silverman had won the C Main over Andy Menne and Nevada’s Mackena Bell. The 25 lap A Main got off to a rough start as Chase Hill, Derek Kennemore and Anderson tangled on the first lap and the red flag fell when Kyle Larson and Close got together triggering flips by both James Crowell and Silverman. All continued and Lentz led early with Copeland passing both Patchen and Southers for 2nd on lap 3. A second flip by Silverman produced a lap 4 red flag and Crowell’s race ended with a lap 5 spin. Patchen spun out of 4th for a lap 7 yellow and Southers went low in turn 2 to claim second from Copeland on the restart. B Main transfer Bloom took fourth from Doug Kennemore on lap 13 and Copeland retook second as Hill and Close tangled for a lap 15 yellow flag. On this restart, leader Lentz spun in turn 1 for the last yellow flag with Patchen and Close tangling. Copeland now led Bloom, Doug Kennemore and Southers. Once in front, Copeland improved his margin to 1/3 lap and Southers got around Doug Kennemore late to finish third. Doug Kennemore was fourth ahead of Lentz, Derek Kennemore, Patchen, Close and Larson.
Wyatt Pruitt was the quickest of 32 Beginner Box Stocks with a 11.630 qualifying run. McClain ran a 11.688 and Jason Mittry had a 11.872. Tyler Seavey tied the mark set by Mittry. Tyler Reddick was sixth quick and won the dash from the pole over Mittry. The four heat races moved just the top 2 into the 25 lap A Main. Jonathan Hoheisel won the first heat over Pruitt with Reddick the second heat winner over Jake Morgan. Cameron Bartlett easily won heat 3 over Jacob Miller. N Bellamy was the fourth heat winner ahead of Tennison. The beginner action limits their main events to 12 kart fields so only the top 4 advance from the B Main. After crashing in his heat race, McClain led wire to wire to win the 20 lap B Main over Mittry and Tristan Miller. Thomas Bellamy broke running 3rd on the last lap. T Bellamy had won the C Main over Wyatt Finley and Matthew Morrison. Despite spinning in the final turn, Bryce Perry from Maxwell won the D Main honors over Jackson’s Steven Nelson and Devin Lee. N Bellamy led the opening lap of the 25 lap A Main with the yellow flying as Reddick, Bartlett and J Miller tangled. The race was over for young J Miller and Tennison took second from Pruitt on lap 3. McClain charged from 9th to take third on lap 4. Bartlett spun for a lap 5 yellow and Pruitt spun out of fifth on lap 10. Reddick gained fifth with the Pruitt spin and he passed Hoheisel for fourth on lap 13. The flying N Bellamy lapped fast timer Pruitt on lap 19 and the final caution came on lap 21 when Bartlett got into the wall in turn 4. Working lapped traffic, both McClain and Reddick got by Tennison on lap 23, but Tennison was able to reclaim third. N Bellamy won ahead of McClain, Tennison, Reddick, Mittry, Hoheisel, T Miller and T Seavey.
