RED BLUFF, Calif. (Jan. 4, 2003) - Each year, the Red Bluff Indoor Winter Series for the Outlaw Karts awards perpetual six foot tall trophies to the feature winners on the first January race and Redding’s Tyler McCain led all 30 laps in his Win River Casino sponsored mount to win the A Main for the Open Outlaw division Saturday night. Tyler stands 8th in points behind his point leading older brother Brian McCain and he was chased all 30 laps by C W Tiner. Ryan Foster debuted a new mount with a strong third place finish. Only a fourth in the dash marred the night for David Wilson in the Open Intermediate class as he posted fast time, won his heat race and then paced all 25 laps of the A Main event. Micah Parmer ran second with a late race pass around Taylor Simas. Wilson started the night just 10 points back of point leader Quintin Crye and Crye finished 10th. It was a big night for the Wilson team as teammate Jonny Lentz won the six foot trophy in the Box Stock action.

The Open Outlaw count was in the low 40’s and Ryan Kaplan posted quick time with a quick 8.688 lap. Point runnerup Sean Becker ran a 8.812, point leader B McCain a 8.863 and Oregon’s Mike Wheeler rounded out the quick four with a 8.866 effort. Defending six foot trophy winner Steven Gannon won the dash honors ahead of B McCain and Daniel Becker. The five heat races advanced just two karts each into the 30 lap A Main. Jasen Webb beat Clint York in heat 1 with Aaron Colburn outrunning T McCain in heat 2. Tiner and B McCain were 1-2 in heat 3 and Foster won heat 4 ahead of Robbie Whitchurch. Daniel Becker captured heat 5 with Todd Carmichael second. The final four entrants in the A Main were determined in the 20 lap B Main were S Becker took the lead from Kaplan on lap 12 to win. Gannon also got around Kaplan on lap 16 to place second while Kaplan salvaged third ahead of Mitch Mootz and Bubba Hill. Jason Schuppert won the C Main ahead of B Hill, Kyle Cattanach and Paul Gunsauls. Visitor Jared Consani flipped in this event and Zack Mason broke while racing in the lead pack. After a fighting incident with Beau Perkins in the heat action, Keith Hill won the D Main ahead of Consani, Perkins and Nevada’s Jay Dargert.

The 30 lap A Main had to be restarted after York and Whitchurch tangled. T McCain charged into the lead over Tiner, D Becker and Webb. D Becker spun for a lap 3 yellow flag with Webb into third over Foster. Both Foster and B McCain got around Webb on lap 9 as the next caution appeared for a Colburn, Mootz tangle. Mootz was done on the two caution rule after spinning on the restart. S Becker had to restart in the rear after spinning into the infield barrier in turn 1 on lap 12. Gannon broke into the top five on lap 18, but got out of shape a lap later triggering a tangle that involved Webb, Whitchurch and York. T McCain was running a flawless race, but had to work one lap of overtime when a tangle between D Becker and York forced a lap 30 yellow flag. T McCain stayed in front for that extra round to win ahead of Tiner, Foster, B McCain, Gannon, S Becker, Kaplan and Whitchurch.

Wilson paced 26 Open Intermediates with a 8.696 effort. Michael Tarter was just a tick back at 8.755 and Michael Hubert III clicked off a 8.877. Parmer and Justin Reinolds rounded out the quick five. Crye was sixth quick and won the dash ahead of Reinolds and Hubert. Each of the three heat races advanced three karts into the A Main. Wilson won the first heat over Simas and Parmer. David Taylor won heat 2 with Reinolds second. Michael Helwig took heat 3 ahead of Crye and division newcomer Brent Hamilton. Tarter led all 16 laps to win the B Main ahead of Hubert, Cody Braund and Oregon’s Joe Weststeyn. Matt Menne had won C Main honors over Oregon visitors T J Kress and Kevin Putnam.

The Open Intermediates have a very hotly contested point championship battle and tonight’s results will again shuffle the standings. The 25 lap feature got off to a slow start with a restart and then cautions on the first two laps. Tarter and Hubert tangled for the restart flag and Parmer got out of shape to trigger a big tangle on lap 1. Parmer drove through the incident to be second behind Wilson on the first scored lap. Hamilton spun on lap 2 for another yellow as Simas settled into third over Reinolds and Braund. Simas was able to take second from Parmer on lap 7 and the next caution came on lap 10 as Tyler Ritcheson and Tarter tangled with Braund breaking. When Tarter crashed on the next round, his race was over and Taylor dropped out. On the restart, Wilson led Simas, Parmer, Reinolds and M Helwig. Crye lost ground with a lap 13 spin and the final yellow came on lap 21 as Hamilton and Braund tangled. M Helwig was able to take fourth from Reinolds on this restart, but he lost the spot back on the final round. Parmer retook second from Simas on lap 23 and Wilson scored an excited win ahead of Parmer, Simas, Reinolds, M Helwig, Hubert, Weststeyn and Chad Widener.
