RED BLUFF, Calif. (Jan. 11, 2003) - After timing in sixth fast, Kyle Cattanach lost the Open Outlaw Kart trophy dash to fellow front row starter Sean Becker, but came back to win the A Main event with S Becker in second as the Red Bluff Indoor Outlaw Kart season continued Saturday night. Redding’s Cattanach has enjoyed great success in the last couple years of Pro Stock racing at Shasta Speedway, but he has not forgot his outlaw kart roots and puts a lot of effort into racing for points at the winter indoor action. With his second place run, S Becker cut Brian McCain’s point lead to just five points and Ryan Foster finished third ahead of Ryan Kaplan. Chad Widener from Marysville won the Open Intermediate A Main and kept alive his track championship hopes. Justin Reinolds ran second and Michael Hubert III used a third to come out of the night with a 2 point lead over David Wilson in their track title duel. Widener is fourth, but just 18 points behind the point leader.

The open outlaws had a 36 kart field and Pete Johnston was quick timer at 8.823. Kaplan ran a 8.827 and Mitch Mootz was third at 8.847. The Becker brothers rounded out the quick five with Daniel in 4th and Sean ranking fifth. Outside front row starter S Becker won the dash with pole starter Cattanach second. S Becker had a huge night as he won the first heat over Clint York. Beau Perkins and Cattanach ran 1-2 in heat 2 and the McCain brothers were 1-2 in heat 3. Six Foot Trophy winner Tyler McCain beat older brother B McCain. Foster and Daniel Becker were 1-2 in heat 4. The top 3 finishers in each heat moved into the A Main. That left four transfer spots from the B Main and fast timer Johnston won that event from the front with Jason Webb second over Todd Carmichael and Bubba Hill. Just missing transfers were Oregon’s Richard Weststeyn and C W Tiner. Brandon Aldred from from Oakley won the C Main with Webb second over David Lewallen. The A Main had 16 starters and Cattanach won an entertaining duel with S Becker for the win. Foster ran third over Kaplan, D Becker, Johnston, Webb, Carmichael and York. B McCain was 12th and saw his point lead cut to just 5 points by S Becker. They have moved ahead of third ranked D Becker as D Becker is 31 points behind second.

Coming off his six foot trophy win of the previous weekend, David Wilson was the quickest of the 22 Open Intermediates with a 8.833 lap. The Open Intermediates race identical 500 cc powered machines as the Open Outlaws and their times were extremely close. Double division racer Brent Hamilton ran a 8.836 and Reinolds was the final 8 second entrant at 8.955. Garet Morton was 4th quick at 9.000. Fifth quick Michael Hubert III won the dash with sixth quick Widener second. The field was split into a pair of heat races with the top 5 in each advancing. David Taylor beat Matt Menne in the first heat and Michael Helwig won heat 2 over Micah Parmer and Morton. Third ranked Quintin Crye won the B Main with Hamilton second ahead of Cody Braund and Tyler Ritcheson. The disappointed Wilson was 10th in his heat and fifth in the B Main to miss the cut into the A Main action. The A Main had 14 starters and Widener charged to the win with Reinolds second ahead of Hubert, 11th starter Crye, Morton, M Helwig, Menne and Taylor Simas. This division has the closest five person track title duel as Hubert paces Wilson by 2 points, Crye by 12, Widener by 18 and Parmer by 24.
