Saturday, February 15, 2003 Hubert closes championship season with feature win
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2003) - In his attempt to overtake Brian McCain for the track championship, Sean Becker led all 30 laps of Saturday night's A Main for the Open Outlaw Karts as the Red Bluff Indoor Winter Season concluded. The QRC All Star Tour champion fell short in the championship bid as B McCain came from last starting to place 4th and wrap up his championship effort. Zack Mason made a rare start and finished 2nd ahead of Kyle Hirst. The Open Intermediate track championship came down to the closing laps of their feature. Michael Hubert III paced the 25 lapper wire to wire to claim the championship with point challenger David Wilson riding right behind him for the final 14 laps. If Wilson could have pulled off a pass, he won have won both the feature and the championship. Hubert was last year's 125 Intermediate track champion and was the 1999 Box Stock champion. Fast Timer Wilson ran second ahead of Quintin Crye.
The Open Outlaws drew 47 entries for their season finale. Kyle Cattanach was quickest at 8.893 and Cycleland champion Ryan Kaplan ranked second at 8.967. Steven Gannon was the final 8 second qualifier at 8.998. Fourth quick Jason Webb lost an engine and he had troubles with the replacement in the heat and preliminary feature action. B McCain added to his point lead with fifth fast time and a win in the dash ahead of Daniel Becker and Gannon. Debuting a new kart after a fierce flip in the C Main the previous week, D Becker beat his brother S Becker in heat 1. C W Tiner outran Aaron Colburn in heat 2 and Tyler McCain won heat 3 ahead of Ryan Foster. Hirst and Todd Carmichael were 1-2 in heat 4 and Robbie Whitchurch won a shortened heat 5 over Mason. That race ended when Karl Pavlik flipped. Clint York also flipped in the heat action. B McCain missed the transfer out of his heat with a third and just made the transfer out of the B Main with a fourth place run. Gannon was the wire to wire winner of the B Main ahead of Cattanach and Josh Chartier. The front foursome ran in order for all 20 laps. Long tow Jake Clausen from Bend, Oregon just missed the transfer into the A Main with a fifth ahead of Jason Schuppert. Beau Perkins won the C Main in front of Bubba Hill and D Main winner Mitch Mootz. Kaplan's night ended with a spin while third in the C Main. Mootz and Kaplan were 1-2 in the D Main ahead of previous week feature winner Pete Johnston. Racing an outlaw kart for the first time, Kurt Burris from the Burris Tire Company won the E Main ahead of Mike Bowers and Brandon Mansfield. Oregon's Todd Boshart spun leading in the E Main.
The A Main had 14 starters and ran the 30 lap distance with just four caution flags. S Becker took the lead over Mason, Hirst and Foster. Fifth place duelers Whitchurch, Tiner and D Becker tangled for a lap 4 yellow and Tiner stalled for a lap 7 yellow. B McCain leaped from 14th starting to fifth in just 4 laps. B McCain took fourth from Foster on lap 14 and Whitchurch spun on lap 18. Colburn stalled for a lap 26 yellow and the caution also dropped on lap 29 when Whitchurch stalled. S Becker was flawless in front, but couldn't put a dent in B McCain's point advantage. Mason and Hirst stayed 2nd and 3rd for the entire race and B McCain ran fourth ahead of his younger brother T McCain. Foster lost several spots on that final lap sprint as Gannon ran 6th ahead of D Becker, Cattanach and Carmichael. D Becker finished third in points. There were 18 Open Intermediates and Wilson was quick timer at 8.916. Chad Widener ran a 8.972 lap and Crye ranked third at 8.990. M Hubert III started the night with a 5 point lead on Wilson, but lost 3 points of that margin when he timed in 4th quick. Both had second place heat finishes as Justin Reinolds beat Wilson and Crye in heat 1. Micah Parmer won the second heat with Hubert second ahead of Cody Braund. Hubert added a point onto his advantage with a third in the dash behind winner Parmer and Reinolds as Wilson ran 4th in that race. Garet Morton was a heat race flip victim. David Taylor led all 15 laps to win the B Main with Morton second ahead of Michael Helwig. The green flag fell on the 25 lap A Main with Hubert holding a 3 point lead on Wilson. Hubert raced into the lead over Reinolds, Wilson and Crye. Braund spun for a lap 3 yellow and Tyler Ritcheson flipped on the front stretch for a lap 4 red flag. As the cars slowed for the red flag, Crye also flipped, but he was allowed to stay in fourth for the restart. A spin by Reinolds on lap 12 allowed Wilson to move into second with Crye third ahead of Parmer and Oregon's Joe Weststeyn. The Red Bluff point system drops five points from 1st to 2nd in the feature so whoever won the 25 lapper was going to be champion. Wilson chased Hubert over the remaining laps through a couple caution periods, but couldn't challenge for the lead. Hubert's win handed him the track title by 8 points over Wilson. Crye ran third in the feature ahead of Pamer, J Weststeyn, Robbie Ritcheson, Michael Tarter and Morton. Unofficially, Crye ended Reinolds by just a single point for third in points and was just 5 in front of Parmer. The Awards Banquet has been scheduled for March 15 and the QRC All Star Tour awards will be presented along with the Red Bluff season awards.
