Saturday, February 15, 2003 Two straight wins for Rogers, Bloom and Mittry
by Race AuthorRED BLUFF, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2003) - Steven Rogers from Redding used wins in the final two 25 lap A Mains of the season to climb into fourth place in the season points for the 125 Intermediate division as the Red Bluff Indoor Winter Season concluded on Saturday night. Rogers led wire to wire for this week's win with young Box Stock star Kyle Larson an impressive second in one of his first 125 starts. Track champion Matt DiBenedetto from Grass Valley finished off his championship season with a third place run. Keith Bloom Jr from Anderson overtook season long point leader Brian Southers from Paradise by winning the final two main events of the 2002-2003 season in the Box Stock class. Bloom had started the final night 7 points back of Southers, but led all 25 laps of the A Main to win the championship duel. Jonny Lentz ran second in the main event and finished third in points. Defending champion Derek Kennemore was 3rd in the main and 4th in the final point listing. For the second straight week, Jason Mittry dominated the Beginner Box Stock action. He won the 25 lap feature after setting fast time. The performance climbed him to third in the final points as champion Tyler Reddick was 2nd in the 25 lapper. Casey McClain finished off his point runnerup season with a 4th behind Nevada's Jay Primm.
DiBenedetto was quickest of the 25 125's with a 9.041 qualifying run. Mason Moore ranked second with a 9.117 and Alan Ambers was third at 9.243. Brett Miller kept his championship hopes alive with a dash win ahead of Rogers and DiBenedetto. Each of the three heat races advanced the top 3 into the A Main. Double division racer Larson won the first heat ahead of Christopher Phillips and Moore beat Tyler Wolf in heat 2. Nevada's Tom Purcell won heat 3 ahead of Rogers and Brent Hamilton. The third player in the track title duel, Oregon's Chadd Noland missed the transfer out of the heat action along with B Miller as both ran fourth. The 20 lap B Main had to be restarted after B Miller spun. Noland led all 20 laps for the win with Richard Bailey a race long second. Derek O'Bannon ran third ahead of Nic Helwig as Cody Miller edged out B Miller for the final transfer forward. In just his second run in the 125's, Derek Copeland won the C Main ahead of Shane Graham and C Miller. Graham spun leading in the final corner. Rogers and Larson ran 1-2 all the way in the 25 lap A Main from their front row starts. The race was only slowed for a single caution on lap 11 when N Helwig spun. DiBenedetto settled into third ahead of Moore and Hamilton. Wolf claimed fifth on the lap 12 restart. Moore lost his fourth place finish when he spun in the final corner. Rogers won ahead of Larson, DiBenedetto, Wolf, Noland, Hamilton and C Miller. Unofficially, B Miller finished one point in front of Noland in their duel for 2nd in points.
Derek Kennemore was quickest of 36 Box Stocks with a 10.316 lap that just edged the 10.317 of Lentz. Dustin Jenkins continued his string of impressive qualifying runs with third quick time at 10.403. The two championship duelers, Southers and Bloom, both timed out of the dash, but Bloom did gain four points on Southers in their title fight. Derek Copeland won the dash with Doug Kennemore second. Each of the four heat races advanced the top 3 into the A Main. Jesse Red beat Derek Kennemore in heat1 with Nevada's Mackena Bell winning heat 2 over Lentz. Southers added a couple points to his point lead with a win in heat 3 over Bloom. Raymond Close and Chase Hill were 1-2 in the fourth heat race. Four more transfers came from the B Main where David Chaves made a late move around Cory Lyon for the win. Robert Tophan and Dillon Silverman also advanced. Copeland spun running 2nd and could only advance back to a fifth to end his night. Jennifer Purcell spun leading the C Main, but battled all the way back to the lead to win with Matt Lyons second ahead of Spencer Stutesman. Beginner Box Stock champion Tyler Reddick also raced with the Box Stocks and got a transfer out of the C Main with a fourth, but turned his kart over to Beginner Box Stock friend Casey McClain for the B Main action. Bloom took a quick lead in the A Main over Hill and Lentz with Southers fifth in the opening laps. Fourth place duelers Doug Kennemore and Southers tangled and they were hit by James Crowell and Chaves. Bloom maintained his lead with Lentz into second on the restart. Southers again lost ground in a tangle with Jenkins as Derek Kennemore passed both Larson and Hill on lap 10 for third. The last caution came on lap 22 as Red and Southers tangled. Bloom stayed out front for the feature win and the track title as Lentz ran second ahead of Derek Kennemore, Larson and Hill. Southers finished 9th behind Silverman, Lyon and M Bell.
Mittry easily paced the 32 Beginner Box Stocks with his 11.406 qualifying run. Reddick was second at 11.689 and Primm edged out McClain for third quick with his 11.850 lap. Nicholas Bellamy was the final 11 second qualifier. Mittry and N Bellamy tangled dueling for the lead in the dash and Wyatt Pruitt won with Primm second. Only the top 2 advanced from the four heat races. Trevor Tennison won heat 1 over Mittry and Pruitt took heat 2 over Reddick. Cameron Bartlett and Primm were 1-2 in heat 3 and Kellcy Bell beat McClain in heat 4. Tyler Seavey led all 20 laps to win the B Main in front of Tristan Miller and Thomas Bellamy. N Bellamy tangled with a lapped car dueling for the lead in the C Main and Esparto's Jordan Miller won in front of Braedon Enos. Jake Morgan won the D Main. Jacob Miller spun out of 2nd and Logan Seavey finished 2nd ahead of Jake Back. Cyle Allison flipped in the C Main action. Mittry struck quickly to the lead in the 25 lap A Main as he paced the opening lap and had a 1/4 lap lead in just 4 rounds. McClain settled into second ahead of Primm, but Reddick raced into third on lap 5. Reddick beat McClain to the lap 7 yellow as Bartlett stalled. Pruitt gained third on the restart, but lost the spot back to McClain on lap 11. Bartlett and T Seavey tangled for the last caution on lap 15. Primm took third from McClain on this restart. Reddick did challenge Mittry over the final ten rounds and the exciting last lap saw them both negotiating heavy lapped traffic. Mittry hung on for the win with Reddick second as third place Primm was 1/3 lap back. McClain ran fourth ahead of Pruitt, T Miller, K Bell, Jonathan Hoheisel and T Seavey.
The Awards Banquet was announced for March 15 and the QRC All Star Tour awards will be presented along with the Red Bluff seasonal awards.
