IKF Region 7 Sprint Championship Hits Willow Springs this Weekend

ROSAMOND, Calif. -- The 2012 season for the International Kart Federation (IKF) Region 7 2-Cycle Sprint Championship Series will continue this weekend as the Willow Springs Kart Club hosts Round #2 on May 5-6. The Willow Springs International Raceway kart track will be the site of the second round of the seven-event schedule. The challenging 6/10-mile course will bring together the best 2-Cycle racers from Southern and Northern California together in 12 different categories.

“We are expecting around the same number of entries for the Willow Springs weekend,” stated Series Coordinator Stewart Willis. “There have been a number of Northern California racers calling up and registering for this event, so we are encouraged that nothing but positive remarks were sent around the karting community following our first event in Adams. With the goal to bring the clubs in Region 7 back in as part of the series is showing to be a plus, following a great weekend with the So-Cal Sprinters and now with the veteran group at Willow Springs. We can’t grow into a premier program in just a few months, but we are certainly building the foundation for something that can be big. I thank everyone who has been involved in some way to making this happen thus far and looking forward to this weekend’s racing.”

The opening round in March at the Adams Motorsports Park hosted roughly 150 in total entries as the So-Cal Sprinters ran a flawless event. With the new format of qualifying, two heat races, and feature event, the racers received plenty of laps around the historic circuit. Hunter Corbitt, coming from Northern California, was the only double winner on the weekend. Earning the win in the Pure Karting KPV 1 class on Saturday, he repeated the feat on Sunday in the Empire Karts KPV 1 Heavy. Corbitt also added another podium finish in the Fleming Racing Engines Jr. 1 PRD, finishing third behind race winner Jake Drew. Travis Lowe and Lloyd Mack led the way in Buddy Rice Karting Senior TaG and Mike Manning Karting Senior PRD. Dennis Uebersetzig won the opening round in the popular K&P Manufacturing KPV 4 Heavy division. Colton Herta and Josh Kurtz split the wins in P1 Engines KPV 2 and Hyper Racing Engines KPV 2 Heavy with Tanner Hudspeth and Carson Mallett on top of the podium in Pitts Performance Kid Kart and PKS Kart Supplies Kid Kart Heavy. Skylar Estrada (RLV Jr. 2 PRD) and Jake Dyne (Grand Products Rookie Comer) rounded out the winners from the AMP weekend.

The event at Willow Springs will give racers another ‘punch’ toward qualifying for the IKF 2-Cycle Grand Nationals, set for June 20-23 at the Fresno Fairgrounds.
