Defebo is back in winning form

ST. JOHNS, Pa. -- Brain Defebo was back in top form Saturday night at Mountain Speedway as he easily cruised to his seventh Modified win of the season.

The last two weeks saw the division point leader have one win taken away after a post race inspection and then he was beaten on track by Don Wagner in an abbreviated feature.

This week it was classic Defebo as he blasted into the lead on a lap-six restart and was unstoppable the rest of the way.

The only time the field was able to get close to him was under yellow as his Sophie’s Tiki Lounge/Defebo Graphics #53 was the class act.

“We had some trouble the last couple weeks and it’s nice to get back to winning,” said Defebo who is now just two wins away from tying Russ Frantz’ 1991 single season Modified win record of nine.

“We’re trying. We got set back there a couple weeks ago over something a little trivial but it won’t happen tonight. It’s been a great year so far and we want to keep that momentum going for the final few weeks.”

Even though Alan Decker grabbed the early race lead there was no denying that Defebo was the car to reckon with. He wasted little time coming from his sixth starting spot and just as he was about to make his move on Decker the caution waved.

That only helped make his effort for the lead easier as it was on the restart that he motored out-front and what has become the norm when he takes the lead it turns into a race for second.

That endeavor went to Wagner who could only ride in Defebo’s shadow as there was no catching his stout running mount on this night.

With six laps top go Jim Wismer inherited the lead after front runners Tyler Haydt and Dave Wallace tangled while dueling for the lead in the make-up Late Model feature from August 9.

Wallace was setting the pace after taking the lead on lap three from his brother Rick. Then looking like he could be a winner for the first time in months he soon had point leader Haydt all over his tail.

Working the inside line on lap 18 Haydt slipped by Wallace for the lead, however as soon as the pair raced into turn two on the next lap there was contact between the them which sent Haydt spinning and Wallace to the rear of the field for his part in the incident.

That handed over the lead to Wismer who then held off Tom Scales for his fourth win and sixth overall of the year. For Scales it was a season best finish.

In the regular 25-lapper the race got off to an awful start as a nine-car pile-up just past the start/finish line that took its toll on some very strong runners including earlier winner Wismer.

When the race did get going it was a flat-out five car shoot-out with pole sitter Phil DeFranco, Chola Shay, Jerry Brighthaupt, Dave Wallace and Tyler Haydt.

Running under a blanket for most of the race the heat was turned up over the final three laps as side-by-side racing was unfolding behind DeFranco. Shay, Brighthaupt and Haydt traded spots while staying glued on DeFranco’s tail.

On the final circuit Haydt pulled out all the stops and made a run at the leader. Coming off turn four he was in a near three-wide battle with DeFranco and Shay for the lead and as they headed to the checkered he suddenly went into a tail spin as DeFranco held on for the win while Shay got a season best second. Brighthaupt was a close third while Haydt went twirling across the line in fourth.

Paul Frantz pulled off a rare feat at Mountain Speedway as he became only the second driver to win a feature in two different classes on the same night, joining the likes of Brian Defebo who originally turned the trick six years ago.

He started his winning night with one thing in mind and that was to keep Shaun Burd from tying his win record of 11 victories in a single season in the Factory Stocks. After taking the lead on lap two he never had a problem afterward and held of Burd for the win.

Then strapping into his Street Stock, Frantz at first had a hard time getting by early race leader Mike Garris, Sr. Getting that job done he then was in a dogfight with Scott Meckes and JR Roth. Meckes got caught-up in a spin with Roth on lap ten and was forced to pit.

Over the final ten tours it was Roth who gave Frantz all he could handle but the talent-laden second generation star was well poised and jubilantly pulled into the Winner’s Circle for the second time on the night eighth time overall this year.

Justin Onderko will long remember the night of September 6 as the rookie Pro Stocker raced to his career first feature win.

Onderko started on the pole but an opening lap spin sent him to the rear however thanks to numerous cautions that shuffled the field he found himself racing the lead away from Frank Katona on lap nine.

Once he did he had the pack covered and drove off to resounding career first win.
