ST. JOHNS, Pa. -- The championship picture is fast coming into focus at Mountain Speedway as just one more regular season race remains and four of the five classes are yet to be decided.

Brian Defebo led the list of Sunday winners as he raced to a record-tying ninth Modified victory. His triumph came after out-battling Don Wagner and Brian Romig in an intense hard-fought clash.

The 30-lap run began with Romig jumping out to the early lead from his pole starting spot and he immediately had close company from Alan Decker.

A caution on lap eight shuffled the runners behind Romig as Wagner and Defebo now began breathing all over him.

Over the next dozen circuits the action had fans on the edge of their seats as lap-after-lap the front trio ran under a blanket. Romig continued to lead but never by much as Wagner and Defebo took turns of wheeling alongside him.

Staying just as near was Decker who was ready to jump at a miscue by the lead pack.

On lap 19 Defebo slipped back into second and next time around powered his way past Romig. Finally after he took the lead he was able to flex some muscle and cruised off to the win.

The win tied him with Russ Frantz who set the single season mark 12 years ago. It also leaves him primed to claim his second consecutive Modified title going into the season finale.

Not soon after Defebo took the lead Wagner then drove to second and stayed there to the finish. Romig held on for a solid third while Decker and Cal Snyder rounded out the top five.

While four of the five division titles are to be decided in one week, Tyler Haydt felt he need not wait that long.

Haydt came to Mountain Speedway this season with one thing in mind, win the Late Model title. Coming into this race he had notched four wins and built a decent cushion with points.

That was a good bit of assurance but the talented driver had one more dash of luck go his way. Originally set to start the race second he was placed first on the grid when pole sitter Tony Volpe spun on the opening green.

Capitalizing on Volpe’s misfortune Haydt then took full advantage and sped off to a commanding lead and won the championship in grand style by taking his fifth checkered flag of the year.

Haydt, who is in his freshman year at East Stroudsburg University, won his third career championship and is close to embarking on 30 career wins in just five years of racing.

Jerry Brighthaupt was second with Jim Wismer, whom was Haydt’s closer point purser, third. Chola Shay and Joe Barbush completed the top five.

Mike Higgins survived a wild caution-filled Pro Stock race to win for the second time this season and in the process solidified his point lead with one race to go.

Brad Kline couldn’t have picked a better way to head into the upcoming point finale. He easily won his second Street Stock feature of the year and with one more point race to go he is now the sole standings leader after starting out the day tied with Scott Meckes.

Kline was elevated into the lead spot when the front two starters of Mike Garris and Jennifer Kutz tangled on the initial green. After that he led from the start to finish while Paul Frantz was second.

Frantz scored his second straight Factory Stock win and fourth of the year. He started eighth but quickly worked his way frontward, passing Bob Hunsicker on lap six and then held off point leader Shaun Burd for the win. Frantz dedicated the win to Mark Corbisiero, a fellow competitor who passed away on September 8 after a bout with cancer.

Heather Frantz, Paul’s wife, closed out the day by winning a special Powder Puff race.
