Defebo sets single season win mark in Mountain Mods

ST JOHNS, Pa. -- He clinched the championship the week previous and the only thing left for Brain Defebo was to try and set the single season win mark for Modifieds at Mountain Speedway.

As he did all season long Defebo was poised and ready to take on that challenge.

He started the 30-lap main from eighth and as always took little time in working towards the front.

Cal Snyder was the early pace setter as he led from the drop of the green but once Defebo reeled in behind him at lap 14 it turned into a scene played out nearly every week. The Champ made quick work of those in front of him and this time his prey was Snyder.

Indeed, that was the case. It happened after the race’s only yellow at midway. At the restart Defebo blasted past Snyder and then motored out to a commanding lead the rest of the way.

At the record setting checkered flag he had pulled to a half-track margin over second place finisher Brain Romig. Mike Adams, Wayne Szerencsits and Lou Strohl completed the top five.

“This is pretty awesome. We’ve run these Modifieds for a couple of years now and to have the kind of season like we had and with such a good car all year long has been a testament to my great crew. We didn’t have much luck traveling this year but here at our home track we sure did. What more can you ask for," said Defebo who notched his second straight title and fourth overall.

Joining in the Victory Lane celebration to congratulate Defebo was Russ Frantz who first set the win mark 12 year ago.

“That’s what records are made for, to be broken and Brian did a great job,” said Frantz.

“I remember driving Thriller cars and watching this man (Frantz) run the Modifieds and beat everybody. To eclipse one of his records an honor,” added Defebo.

Tyler Haydt put an exclamation point to his championship season as he won the final Late Model point race of the year.

His division leading sixth win of the year came after waging a hard-fought battle with Brain Defebo who was pulling double duty.

With three laps to go and Defebo leading, Haydt was able to drive under him coming off turn two and on to victory.

AJ Scaglione won his very first Pro Stock race and Mike Higgins his very first division championship.

Scaglione started from the pole but was passed by Rich Spaide on a lap four restart. Spaide was then hooked up in a torrid battle with point contender Joe Hoffman and after some slick side-by-side action Hoffman overtook Spaide with 11 laps down.

In the meantime Higgins was battling for a fifth place finish that would have guaranteed him the title. But with four laps to go he tangled with Chris Burge and was sent to the rear of the pack.

The championship looked like it was Hoffman’s, however, with two laps to go second place runner Spaide banged into the back of Hoffman which put a spinning halt to his second straight title as both drivers had to restart from the rear.

Scaglione then led the final two laps and Higgins’ seventh place tally landed him the title.

Scott Meckes led every lap and won his second Street Stock feature of the year but it wasn’t enough to aid him in winning this year’s title. That distinction went to Brad Kline whose fourth place tally was enough to hand his first career championship. Meckes wound up second in the standings.

Paul Frantz raced to his third consecutive Factory Stock win and fourth of the year.

At the same time Shaun Burd’s second place run assured him of the 2003 division championship
