Saturday, May 10, 2003 Hot racing action at Mountian Speedway
by Race AuthorSt. JOHNS, Pa. -- With four races into the 2003 Mountain Speedway season, Brian Defebo evened the score in wins with Don Wagner as he notched his second victory Saturday night under the lights.
The race began with rookie Alan Decker jumping out to the early lead but he immediately had the reigning champ Defebo all over his tail. It was hard to tell that Decker was a rookie Modified driver as he did an excellent job of fending off Defebo who persistently poured on the pressure. With caution free racing over the first 21-laps the action was fast paced and furious. Plenty of side-by-side dueling was taking place among the top runners which aside from the front two included the likes of Shaun Carrig, Mike Adams and Wagner. By mid-race Defebo went to the outside of Decker and slipped into the lead. Four laps later Wagner made a similar move and took up second. After that the two raced intently as Wagner continued knocking on the door of Defebo but each time by that door was closed tight. Even a last lap caution could not help Wagner get by as Defebo held on to win for the second time this year. "That was a lot of fun to get out front and then do all that side-by-side racing with Alan (Decker). He’s a good clean driver. It was a good race from were I was sitting and I’m glad we're sitting here in Victory Lane now," said Defebo. "We struggled by not winning a race last year and now to win two races and Donny (Wagner) winning two it’s going to be neat to see who goes out and gets number three."
Larry Fisher made no bones about prepping for the upcoming Mountain Speedway/Mahoning Valley Speedway Late Model Mini-Series 50-lap race this coming Saturday night, May 17. Rolling off 12th and making only his first start of the year, Fisher stormed into the top three in just three laps and then overhauled Tom Spencer in lapped traffic on lap 14. Once in front he was able to run away from the pack en-route to a very popular win. "This feels great to win here tonight," said Fisher. "We just wanted to come out and shake down the car for next week and it was bit surprising to be able to win like we did. These guys here as very tough and anytime you could win over them it says a lot."
In Pro Stock action Rich Spaide, Jr., grabbed the lead on the opening tour and then fended off point leader Joe Hoffman the rest of the way to earn his first win of the year. In the process Spaide was able to snap the two-race win streak by Hoffman.
Bruce Long made it two wins in a row in the Street Stocks. Unlike the previous week, however, this time he had strong opposition coming his way as Brad Kline made him earn every bit of the win by dogging him tooth and nail right down to the wire.
Shaun Burd continued to be the hot-hand in Factory Stocks as he scored an impressive win for the second week in a row. Burd, who started ninth, took little time in getting to the front as by lap five he had moved in on early race leader Sue Collins and once getting past her made it a race for second.
