Saturday, May 17, 2003 Defebo notches third Mountain Mod win
by Race AuthorST. JOHNS, Pa. -- Brian Defebo has certainly lived up to his goal for 2003. Win as many races as possible. So far he’s done pretty well for himself as the reigning champion picked up his second straight win and third overall Saturday night at Mountain Speedway.
“I really can’t believe this,” said an elated Defebo from Victory Lane. “I was never able to win back-to-back races in the Modifieds so this is awesome. The car was working perfect and I am so happy for my crew and how things have been working out this year.”
Indeed. Winless last year despite being crowned the division champ, Defebo set his sights on getting victories and thus far it’s been mission accomplished.
Pole sitter Brian Romig jumped out front early on and set the pace until New Jersey invader Pete Brittian stormed past him after a lap five restart.
Brittian, who is no stranger to winning at Mountain, was strong running but had Defebo chasing him almost instantly. Bringing on the pressure Defebo felt four laps out front would be long enough for Brittian as he made his race winning move with a sleek inside pass in turn one on lap nine.
From there on he controlled his own destiny. With relative ease Defebo cruised ahead of the pack and on to win number three.
Brittian in the meantime had Mike Adams giving him all he could handle, trying both high and low to get past. Brittian, in spite of this, held his ground and raced to a solid runner-up over Adams.
Also making a rare appearance was TJ Potrzebowski who was fourth while Romig completed the top five.
Track management called the Modified drivers to a special meeting at the end of the evening and announced that starting next week Hoosier tires will be taking the place of the current American Racer tires. The American Racer can be used this coming week but afterwards Hoosier will be the track tire.
At this time only the Modified division will race on the Hoosier’s.
In Late Model action Larry Fisher was fast from the start in a special 50-lap event. He took off like a rocket from the pole and proceeded to lead every lap.
However, his post race celebration was halted when his car tipped the scales a bit on the heavy side while going through the post race inspection.
The win instead went to Jim Wismer, Jr., who chased Fisher from the start. It marked the fourth win thus far for Wismer in ‘03.
Tyler Haydt was credited with second while Brian Defebo had a very busy night driving his Late Model to a third place finish prior to winning the Modified feature. Jerry Brighthaupt and Tony Volpe rounded out the top five.
Joe Hoffman was back to his winning ways in the Pros Stocks, grabbing the lead from Mike Higgins on lap five and then putting it into cruise control the remaining distance.
Mark Corbisiero held off Scott Meckes to win his first Street Stock feature of the year and in the Factory Stocks Shaun Burd kept his hot hand going by winning for the third straight week.
