Saturday, June 28, 2003 Defebo holds off Beers for fourth Mountain win
by Race AuthorST. JOHNS, Pa. -- Brian Defebo continued to ride his current wave of success as the defending Modified champion scored his fourth win of 2003.
Coming from ninth starting spot Defebo was able to get past Shaun Carrig and Eric Beers after some intense three-wide action en-route to victory.
Donny Hartzel started out from the pole and jumped to the early race lead. Carrig kept the pressure on the rookie and used a lap-two restart to work his way out front.
At the same time Beers began a hard fought pursuit on Carrig and was staying glued to his bumper.
Meanwhile Defebo was the man on the move as he stormed through the pack and soon joined the front pair. The trio then began an outstanding three car battle for the lead.
Using the high groove to make his moves Defebo powered his way past Beers and Carrig after completing lap 13. From there it was smooth sailing as he remained the class leader letting all others follow him to the checkered flag.
“I just tried to watch at the beginning of the race and keep it going good. I saw my moves and I knew I had to take them,” said Defebo. “With us running the Hoosier tires now you can pass more on the outside and it’s always more fun that way.
Getting four wins at this juncture of the season wasn’t what he had expected but all the same he’s very happy with the results thus far.
“We’re having a good year and I can’t complain. I don’t want to curse it right now because it’s early yet and there’s still a lot of racing to do,” Defebo added.
Beers held on for second while Mike Adams took third after fighting his way back from some early race spins. Carrig held on for fourth while Alan Decker rounded out the top five.
Late Model point leader Tyler Haydt had his A-game going as he scored his first Mountain Speedway win in the rained-out feature originally set from June 14 then came back to score the nightcap.
In the opening race Haydt snagged the lead away from Dean Kline, Jr., on lap four and from there waged a torrid battle with Jim Wismer the rest of the way.
Dave Wallace remained within sight of the leaders and was a close third while Phil DeFranco and Chola Shay recorded their first top fives of the season.
Then in the regular scheduled race Haydt was able to slip under the spinning car of then leader Steve Pilman on lap three and afterwards raced handily out-front the rest of the way and cap off a perfect night.
Wallace was his closest pursuer this time with Wismer, Shay and Kline rounding out the top five.
Joe Hoffman continued his stronghold in the Pro Stocks as he raced to his fifth win in six starts and in the process kept tabs on his solid top ranking in the division points.
Mike Higgins took the lead from Chris Burge after lap two but it wasn’t long before Hoffman took over had Higgins chase him the remaining distance.
In Street Stock action Paul Frantz made good on his pole starting spot and ran with near perfection in leading every lap of the 20-lap feature. It was a sweet win indeed for the second generation driving as it marked his first every win with the class after a starring career with the Factory Stocks.
Another Factory Stock feature and another win for Shaun Burd. After passing early leader Jared Aigeldinger on lap five Burd was able to check out and cruise to his fifth straight win of ’03.
