Saturday, July 26, 2003 Defebo racks up sixth Modified win while Wismer returns to winning form in Late Models
by Race AuthorSt. JOHNS, Pa. -- After some intense side-by-side racing with fellow Berwick driver Mike Adams, point leader Brian Defebo was able to make his way to the lead on lap 12 and then eased to his sixth win of the year.
The race began with Alan Decker getting out front early on but after a lap two restart Adams outran Decker into turn one and grabbed the lead.
By lap six Defebo, who started seventh, hooked up with Adams and the fierce two abreast action then ensued.
There was some great heads-up maneuvering on the part of Adams when Defebo squeezed inside of him in turn one of lap 10 and thanks to Adams allowing just enough room they both made it through cleanly.
That pass went for naught, however, as the caution came out for a spinning Shaun Gartner. When the action did resume the two-by-two racing was back on with Defebo on his preferred high side line where he finally made the pass stick after one dozen laps in.
Afterwards he cruised to the Winners Circle and added to his remarkable winning season.
“Who would ever think I’d have six wins in one season with the Modifieds, that’s pretty awesome,” said Defebo.
He then commented on the near miss incident on lap 10.
“Me and the 68 (Adams) got together there and I was already committed going down the straightaway so I had to follow through otherwise I’d had lost a wheel but they put him back up front from the caution and that was good.
“Mike is a great racer and a clean racer, if it was anybody else after the restart they would have run me up into the way but he’s a good driver and he don’t like going home with wrecked equipment.”
Adams held on for second with Brain Romig, Donny Hartzel and Earl Paules rounding out the top five.
In late Model action Jim Wismer made his forth trip to Victory Lane although it wasn’t since April 27.
Wismer took the lead from a much improved Joe Barbush who had the top spot from lap three until lap eleven when Wismer ducked down low off turn two and motored his way out-front.
“I missed it here and I love being in Victory Lane ,” said Wismer. “We made a ton of changes in the last three or four weeks. We had a little bit of bad luck and should have capitalized on some other finishes. My dad and Dennis Maloney really worked hard to figure out a good handling package. I also got to thank Hamke Race Cars. This car is probably the best one I ever had here.”
Point leader Tyler Haydt was second while Barbush earned a season best third. Dave Wallace and Myron Haydt completed the top five.
Joe Hoffman had little trouble in racing to his seventh Pro Stock win of the year. Even though he had to pit after a spin on lap two he still came on strong after passing Paul Monkoski on lap six and then drove on to yet another victory.
Jennifer Kutz is getting the hang of winning races as the popular Bethlehem driver scored her second straight Street Stock win and third of the season.
The race got off to a struggle-some start with a rash of yellows. When things did get rolling Kutz took the lead away from Glenn Heckman on lap ten and then left her male counterparts in her wake.
It wasn’t easy but Shaun Burd got his seventh Factory Stock win of ’03. It came after a hard fought tussle with a determined Amber Levandowski who for the second week finished second but is proving herself the most worthy to unseat Burd from his dominance.
