Saturday, August 18, 2012 Mefford Makes it Two in a Row at Mount Lawn
by Rick SweigartNEW CASTLE, Ind. -- Brandon Mefford of Spiceland took the lead of the Late Model feature on lap 8 and went on to his second feature win in as many weeks at Mt Lawn Speedway located west of New Castle. Bill Pierce Jr. of New Castle started on the pole and jumped to the early lead and led the first 7 laps. Mefford and Scott Knepley of Spiceland tangled in the big turn on lap 7 bringing out the caution and forcing Knepley to restart at the rear of the field. LJ Lines of Lewisville followed Mefford through the traffic and move into second position at the same time as Mefford took the lead of the double file restart following the Knepley caution flag. Lines closed in on Mefford numerous times over the final 22 laps but could not generate enough momentum to take over the top spot. Lines settled for second followed by Wes Russell Jr. of Muncie, Knepley, David McConnell of Shirley, Rob Young of Greenfield, Pierce, Brock Anderson of Albany, Randy Anderson of Knightstown and Kent Carson of Richmond. Fast time went to Russell Jr. at 17.036 with Knepley and Pierce winning the heats.
Wes Russell Sr. of Muncie turned in strong performance in the VanHoy Oil Thunder Car division leading the entire 30 laps for the win. Russell Sr. was driving for Walker Racing in the same car that Andrew Walker of Sulphur drove at the start of the season. Walker joined the military at near mid-season while leading in the points and just finished his basic training this week. Russell’s win was not an easy task as he had to battle Johnny Magee of Carthage and Jason Walker of Sulphur Spring over the final 29 laps. On more than one occasion Magee and Russell made contact while battling for the lead but each time Magee would ease up on the pressure and let Russell regain control. Magee and Walker finished second and third followed by Nick Warner of Anderson, Jim Walker of Cambridge City, David Clark of Muncie, Zach Lacy of New Castle, Mark West of Parker City and Dustin Foust of Rushville. Clark and Jason Walker went into the night tied in the point standing and Walker now holds a two point lead over Clark with two races remaining on the schedule. Fast time went to Jason Walker at 18.458 with Clark and Lacy winning the heats.
Larry Hughes Jr. of Greensboro picked up his third feature win for 2012 in the Hornet division. Hughes started on the tail of the feature after setting fast time for the evening 19.573 in qualifications. Jeff Sorrell of New Castle led the first 6 laps when Nick Warner of Anderson moved into first place. Warner built a sizable lead on second place Sorrell and appeared to be on his way to his second feature win of the season but Hughes had other ideas. Hughes got around Sorrell on lap 13 and then began to reel in Warner. Finally with 5 laps to go Hughes dove under Warner entering the big turn to take the lead and led the rest of the way. Warner did hold on for second followed by Andy Jennings of Richmond, Keith Morris of New Castle, Sorrell, Emily Henderson of New Castle, Scott Kilgore of New Castle, Alex Bailey of New Castle and Lenny Tungate of New Castle. Hornet heats went to Bailey and Tungate. Terry Neal of New Castle moved into the lead of the Rookie Hornet point standings as he took the feature win over Rodney Sutton of New Castle and Don Marlow of New Castle. Neal set fast time for the Rookie Hornets and won the heat.
16 FasKarts were on hand with Ryan Cherry of Indianapolis taking a hotly contested feature event. Randy Caldwell of Indy finished second followed by David Reynolds of Indy, Joel Shores of Indy, Ben Smith of Crawfordsville, John Wilson of Indy, Jay Reynolds of Indy, Jason Reynolds of Indy, Paul Acree of Anderson, Elvin Acree of Indy, Donavin Hill of Indy, Barry Cherry Sr. of Indy, Barry Cherry Jr. of Indy, Dale Hendrickson of Ingalls, Angela Goodin of Indy and Gary Saylor of Greenfield.
