CONCORD, N.C. -- Dennis Schoenfeld opened his 2005 season Saturday night with a stunning win in the Future Cellular Big 10 race at Concord Motorsports Park. After knocking on victory’s door several times in’ 04, Dennis came to CMP with the necessary ingredients to put on a dominating performance. Dennis combined his silky smooth driving style with the genius of set-up specialist Randy Dean and engine tuner Tom Negrete.
Dennis provided the field of 22 super late models with a preview of things to come when he posted a qualifying time of 15.63, the best of his career and the winning pole award for the night. The top six qualifiers drew for starting positions and Dennis drew pill number two which placed him outside Freddie Query on the front row.
At the drop of the green flag Dennis, possessed with renewed confidence, drove his Schoenfeld Headers/Line-X Chevy Monte Carlo deep into turn one, cleared Query by three car lengths to assume a lead that he would never relinquish. Query brought out the first of numerous caution flags when he spun in turn two and would not be a factor for the remainder of the race. Teddy Musgrave assumed the second spot behind Dennis for the mid-portion of the race but he would eventually fall victim to a broken axle. During the final stages of the race Dennis increased his lead by a full straight away and would never see a serious challenge. As the 125 lap race came to a close Dennis was still posting consistent sub-16 second lap times while pulling away from the field.
The Victory Lane celebration was a long-awaited joyous event as the Fort Smith, Arkansas native wheeled his racer behind the front straight wall. Dennis was joined in Victory Lane by his wife Bonnie, sons Dennis Jr. and Michael, crew members and many well wishers. His post-race interview included a heart-felt thanks to all of his loyal sponsors and especially his father Don and brother Doug Schoenfeld. Dennis was convinced that a large part of his horsepower gain came from the newly designed Schoenfeld “Tri-Y” Headers.
Dennis will travel to Birmingham, Alabama for this weekend’s Southern All Stars “Show Me the Money 200” which pays $10,000 to win. Join the Schoenfeld Racing Team this weekend in Birmingham or follow Dennis’s 2005 race progress at www.dennisschoenfeld.com.
