Sunday, July 25, 2010 Martin, Murray, Osborn, and Herrick Win at Dawson County Raceway
by Darin RacekLEXINGTON, Neb. -- Everything fell into place for a great and fast night of racing at Dawson County Raceway on July 25. The temperature was comfortable for everyone, the track was fast, and most of the drivers avoided major incidents, which aided in the show being completed in just a little over two-and-a-half hours. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Colton Osborn of Cozad, Anthony Martin of Wilcox, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis completed A Feature wins for the evening.
IMCA Modified driver Bo Egge of Kearney started on the pole of the A Feature after winning his heat race, and shot out to a lead. David Murray started on row four and used the low line to track him down by lap two. The only caution period occurred on the third lap, meaning the final seventeen laps went unabated. Egge, who had a birthday Saturday and a best ever second place finish in an NCRA Late Model event in Eagle on Friday night, had a tire go down after the restart, which ended his evening. Murray was tracked down by Cole Hodges of Ogallala until a control arm broke on his car, allowing Murray to drive away for his eighth win at the track this season, and 32 wins overall. Hodges kept running the low line, and despite Jay Steffens of North Platte and Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan tracking him down near the end, he did hold on for second. Frenier squeaked by Steffens on the last lap for third place. Josh Sabin of North Platte stayed near the front and finished in fifth place. Scott Smith of Davenport was the winner of the Cash Dash. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg was the winner of the other IMCA Modified heat race.
The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was a good show, with a lot of close racing. Colton Osborn was able to take the lead on the opening lap, joined quickly by Maywood’s Casey Werkmeister, his fellow heat race winner. Osborn stayed on the low line while Werkmeister tried to get by on the high line. Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa and Cale Osborn of Cozad joined the battle up front, and Cale was able to sneak into second place behind his brother with a handful of laps to go. Nichols got by Werkmeister, then passed Cale Osborn for second place, but could not move Colton out of the top spot. Werkmeister fell to fourth place at the finish. Brandon Clough of Wallace earned the fifth spot.
For the second time in three race nights, the IMCA Hobby Stocks ran a caution-free event. Anthony Martin took the lead when the green flag fell, followed closely by Terry Eatherton of Gibbon. The duo pulled away from the field to determine the top spot. Eatherton had a couple of good runs during the fifteen lap race, but couldn’t quite find the “umph” in his car to pass Martin for the lead. It was Martin’s second win of the year, in his second car of the year. Jim Rayburn of Gibbon finished in third place. Dillon Thompson of Campbell passed Jim Buss of Blue Hill for fourth. Thompson, Martin, and Allen Halte of Grand Island won the three heat races for the Hobby Stocks.
The IMCA Northern SportMod division had plenty of passing for the lead. Eric Steinmark of Kearney paced lap one, but was passed before the completion of lap two by Bryan Herrick. Herrick would be passed on lap three by Robby Leonard of Gibbon, who would lose the spot on the next lap by Vince Leibert of Lexington. Leibert would hold for a few laps, until Herrick was able to make a run at him and take over at the half way point. Herrick would stay out front for his second win in as many weeks. Leonard would win the battle for second place. Leibert would spin out on the last lap, handing third over to Shane Stout of North Platte, who started in the back of the field after the first caution. Colton Osborn took fourth spot. Steinmark finished in fifth place. Steinmark and Brandon Leonard of Gibbon were the winners of the SportMod heat races.
Dawson County Raceway will have a week off, and return to action on Sunday, August 8. It will be fan appreciation night that night. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the races start at 6:30 p.m.
