Friday, June 8, 2012 Rookie-of-the-Year Battles Tighten in Several Indianapolis Speedrome Divisions

INDIANAPOLIS -- While championships and feature victories are high on driver goals at the Bryant Heating and Cooling Indianapolis Speedrome, the first step towards obtaining them comes during a first year. You only have one chance to win a rookie-of-the-year award in a particular racing class. And in 2012, we have some dandy duels underway for those forever spots in the history books. There is a doubleheader weekend on tap for fans to view the action. Friday June 8th has the USSA Mel Kenyon Midgets, Circle City Pyrotechnics Junior Faskarts, INEX Legends, Hornets, Hornet Figure 8, and Junior Hornets. Saturday June 9th has the Joe?s Value Construction Late Models, Stocks, Roadrunners, Hornets, Junior Hornets, and Hornet Figure 8. Both evenings began at 7pm.
The quest for the Bobby Ellett Memorial rookie-of-the-year award in the Joe?s Value Construction Late Models is currently a two-horse race. Stock division veteran Dennis Sloan and young Hornet transfer Zach Catron have traded the lead on several occasions. Both last names are familiar to longtime Speedrome fans as both are inside of a third generation at the one-fifth mile track. Dennis has an advantage of 45 points heading into the weekend. A former BEM rookie runner-up Christopher Green paces the freshman in the Stock division in 2012. Green increased his margin over Kenny Smith at the end of May with his first feature victory in the series.
The Circle City Pyrotechnics Junior Faskarts top rookie standoff has a pair of pure first year Speedrome racers out in front. Jayson Glaze has quietly bolted to the front of the introductory standings. His patience paid off in a couple of crazy events earning him two impressive feature podium finishes. But not too far behind is fourth generation driver Kimmie Greig. The daughter of 2011?s ?King of the Speedrome? Doug Greig has a couple of preliminary wins and some solid main event runs under her belt. On Sunday May 27th, she led the majority of the 20-lap feature before fading in the late stages. Also in the hunt for the Junior Faskart honor are Levei Hargraves, James Rybolt, Nicole Viela, and Garrett Fox.
The Roadrunners have a trio of rising stars vying for the prestigious award. Just recently moving into the hunted position is Jeremy Pierce. The new to the Speedrome driver has made vast gains in his on track presence over the past few weeks with experience. The pre-season favorite for this honor Harold Bruce now resides in the second slot. The brash hard-charger got caught up in a preliminary heat race tangle recently that cost him valuable points. Rounding out the pack is Justus Turner. This driver is under the wings of Bulldog Motorsports. The Bobby Whitaker led team has helped this young gun get better each and every time he hits the racing surface.
