Sonoma up Next for K&N West Rookie Dylan Hutchison
by Steven Blakesley
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- 17 year-old NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West rookie Dylan Hutchison looks to continue his recent hot streak in the series when they race in arguably their toughest and most significant event this weekend. Hutchison will hit the 1.99 mile Sonoma road course on Saturday afternoon for the "Pick-N-Pull 200" held during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the wine country venue.
Hutchison is a Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender driving for Jack Sellers Racing in the #5 Johnnie Walker Performance / Bay Bio Diesel Chevrolet. He is looking for his third consecutive top-ten in the series this weekend after finishing ninth on the Brainerd International Raceway road course in Minnesota and eighth at the Las Vegas Bullring oval track.
"I'm not going to lie; I am a little nervous about Sonoma," Hutchison said. "I have been playing it a ton of my NASCAR video game so I have some knowledge of the track but you never really know until you race it!"
Sonoma marks the third road course event out of four on the 2012 schedule. Activity gets underway early on Friday morning with a pair of practice sessions before qualifying later that afternoon.
Race day on Saturday will see the race going green at approximately 12:30 p.m. for the 64 lap contest. So far in 2012, tire changes have not been allowed in the K&N West road course events and that has led to unique pit stop strategies such as what Hutchison used at Brainerd when he pitted late in the race.
Combine tire management with the 2011 race having eight full course cautions, and Saturday's event will be about patience and survival.
"I definitely think we are capable of another top-ten but there will be a lot more competition at this race," Hutchison said. "My main goal is not to jump right on the track and be one of the fastest guys. Instead, I was to work my way up to speed and make sure I finish the race."
Following Sonoma, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West will head to the Pacific Northwest for a race at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA on July 14.
