HAYS, Kan. -- Fifty IMCA Modifieds and 45 IMCA Northern Sport Mods checked in for ‘Modified Mania’, sponsored by Federated Auto Parts, at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Tuesday evening, August 7. When the evening was over, Dylan Smith of Osceola, NE, claimed the $2,000 winner’s check in the modifieds, and current national point leader Jesse Sobbing of Glenwood, IA, made the long haul worthwhile in the sport mods to claim a win and a $1,000 payday.

Also on hand to compete were NASCAR stars Ken Schrader, driving the #9 Federated Auto Parts modified, and Clint Bowyer, wheeling the #15 Crawford Supply BMS modified.

Smith started outside pole of the 30-lap modified feature and jumped out to an early lead, but gave way to Ken Schrader on lap 3. The first caution waved on lap 8 when David Murray drove off turn 1. Schrader led the field back to green, but was passed by Smith on the following lap. Smith was able to lead the remaining distance, but was challenged late by Josh Most of Red Oak, IA. ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick of Wakeeney passed Most late in the race for the runner-up spot, while Jordan Grabouski of Beatrice, NE, nipped Belleville’s Brandon Blochlinger at the wire for fourth. Clint Bowyer finished 7th and Schrader 8th. Heat race winners included Grabouski, Most, Rob Day, Tyler Sutton, Murray, and Smith. ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick and Dave Pederson claimed the checkers in the two B-features.

In the IMCA Sport Mod A-main, Ben Kates of Tonganoxie led the opening lap before the caution waved on lap 2 for debris. Then on lap 9, hometown driver Trenton Kleweno took the lead, only to have the caution come out on the following lap for a two car tangle. Kleweno led the field back to green, but was then passed by current national point leader Jesse Sobbing, who led the rest of the 20-lap distance for a trip to victory lane. Kleweno finished second, trailed by Tracy Holloway, Blaine Walt and Kyle Olberding. Jesse Levin, Olberding, Jason Nelssen, Kleweno, Bart Baker and Tony Rost claimed victory in their respective heat races. B-feature winners were Jake Krone and Austin Walker.

There were drivers from 7 states on hand to compete.

Again Federated Auto Parts was the evening’s race sponsor.

Racing action returns to Hays this Saturday, August 11, with all 5 regular classes competing. Four make-up features will also be ran from the June 30th rainout. Race time is 7:00 p.m.
